Is it worth buying a controller?

Or should I stick to the keyboard? At the moment, it feels a bit hard to combo actions in a such period of time, and I give it to my general inexperience toward platformers.

If you've used both keyboard and controller for a reasonable time, which one do you think would be better off to start with?

While the keyboard controls do the job, I think Spelunky plays better with a controller. If you do get a controller, make sure that whatever you get is Xinput-compatible.

I'd recommend a 360 controller, but if you want something a bit cheaper, I think the Logitech F310 is a pretty good choice. Just make sure that the switch on the back of the Logitech controller is set to X, and it should work fine.

The Logitech F310 has kinda bad triggers, though, so you might want to shop around and see if you can find something better that's still Xinput-compatible in leu of buying a 360 controller.

I actually prefer keyboard, and I know some other people do as well, but most people say a controller is better for them.

I prefer keyboard too, but it's totally preference. I would not recommend getting a controller just for Spelunky though. Only if you have plans for many games currently... or if you have the money to spare for it anyway.

i had a lot more fun using a controller. its more natural than the keyboard for me. at least for this type of game. i went out and bought one and havent regretted it. but in the end its about preference

You can play with your friends if you have an xbox controller. you can use the keyboard and your friend can use the controller. even works with multiple controllers.

i have both.. i use keyboard if im playing alone because im lazy to plug in controller. And there is pretty much no difference in my gameplay. though.. its more comfortable with controller. but i dont think its worth buying controller just for this game.

100% worth buying a controller for this game alone. The design is incredible, and for me as a long-time console gamer, a controller is a must.

For rogue yes, I would say its perhaps worth the money if you aren't on a tight budget.

while rogue is possible on keyboard, its much easier on a gamepad. though spelunky is fine, even though I have a controller I use a keyboard.

If you ever get super meat boy though, get a controller.

Yup get a controller. I find it a hassel to keep pressing the key on the keyboard to run.

I don't have a controller and have a 400k highscore.
All you need to do is rebind all your keys to buttons that you're comfortible with. Every game I play I bind keys to similar actions so I know exactly what to do.

What are your binds, for example? What made you change them?
