Mostly just use whatever works best for you; there's advantages to both. (One unusual potential issue with keyboards to be aware of, though - some crappier keyboards, such as the one I'm using, don't accept too many inputs at the same time depending on which keys they are. So I can't get input for Up Arrow + Right Arrow + 'E' all at the same time, for example.)
Pretty sure the majority will say gamepad, though the controls and physics are 'simple' enough to do just fine on a keyboard.
But that's kinda subjective so it depends on the person playing
On topic though, having a gamepad isnt that important for this game. Nice, sure, but not neccisary.
And I not only Golden God Super Meat boy using keyboard, but also got all achievements, including Impossible Boy (type 'Impossible Boy Iron Man' in youtube search and see for yourself :P)
And let's get back on topic - I'd say that using controller is not better, but a little bit more convenient. There are games that I prefer to play using keyboard (Meat Boy) and Spelunky works better for me while I use gamepad ( I still suck at the game btw, I've never beaten it despite spending 23 hours in it already :P)
But yeah, this game is more about planning than twitch movements, so needing a the most comfortable input method isnt as important as in meatboy. If you have a controller, use it, but dont go buying a controller JUST for this game.
(1) This is the biggest one: back and forth is much quicker on a keyboard versus a controller. You can microadjust if you're avoiding landing on spikes, or when trying to hit a bt with the tip of a whip in a way that you can't with a controller. Think the difference between releasing thumb, moving thumb, pressing thumb versus how fast you can type adadadadadad.
(2) Having a sepearate finger on the whip / dash, for me, gives me more controll over dashing. I'm constantly holding and releasing dash and find myself playing a lot "flashiner" style, with a lot of extra, adjusting movements. It's sort of like if you're playing hockey, and you're stick handling, there are a lot of extra, unnecessary movements as you are sort of always feeling around where the puck is. It might not be a huge advantage but sort of makes the game more interesting, I feel.
(3) This isn't Super Metroid, you don't need to hold down a large number of keys at once. The only tricky part is probably running+jumping+rope, but you just have to make sure the rope is mapped somewhere easy to access. (I've never had to run-jump-bomb)
(4) It's really easy to mix up the diagonals and the horizontals on the xbox controller. The diagonal motion is almost never needed in this game. This usually isn't that important, but I've gotten killed with the teleporter countless times with the controller for this reason.
It's a platformer, so I always assumed that controller would be better. But really, the lack of a need for diagonals and the fact that you're usually not pressing more than 3 or 4 keys at once means that there is no real need for a controller. The game was designed for a keyboard, originally, which means that it usually doesn't overload it. Just after playing a few hours with the keyboard and -- I'm not getting more consistent -- but I am playing with more confidence, taking more risks (and that might be a bad thing!).
It's really cool playing with the keyboard, I definitely recommend you try it.
to see whether your keyboard can handle things like jump+dash+rope+whip or something.
That's a great resource, although I've painfully figured out most of my ghosting issues by trial and error already... Sine More wouldn't let me change my controls, so I was flat unable to use one of the main mechanics in the game (freezing time) because I couldn't move properly + shoot at the same time.
With my current Spelunky setup (W = jump, E = whip/action, R = bomb, Q = rope, arrows = move), I can't jump and then throw an object upward (ghosting conflict with W + E + Up Arrow) - rarely relevant, but still annoying.
1. When jumping onto a rope (or ladder, vine etc), I hold the relevant movement key and up at the same time, so that I grab the rope as soon as possible. It's very helpful in those vine/monkey/spike things in the jungle.
2. I like to pick stuff up by running past it and tapping down and x at the right time without releasing the movement key. This is faster and easier than stopping to pick it up.
3. Throwing objects up or down while jumping forward
4. Crawling over ledges to flip-hang onto spikes safely (pretty rare)
I've played with both keyboard and controller. Admittedly, when I first played with the controller, I was used to the keyboard, and I quickly went back to the keyboard after trying the controller. But I definitely prefer the keyboard. And one of the big reasons I prefer the keyboard is how easy and reliable the diagonals are - or to be more specific, that the up/down controls can be pressed independently of left/right.
