Bug - Spelunky Crashes with Windows 8.1
I just upgraded to Windows 8.1 and found that if Spelunky is running and I click on my second monitor in Windows to check something, when I click on the Spelunky icon in the taskbar to return to the game it crashes. This didn't happen before I upgraded to Windows 8.1 it worked fine returning to the game with Windows 8.

I actually just had this same problem with Spelunky and Windows 8.1. Anyone else out there? Kind of a horrible bug, even if it's only for a small set of users.

Just don't use 8.1, there are issues with a lot of games because of it.

It's not that easy. You can't just downgrade your OS randomly as you feel like, it's not that straightforward nor practical of a solution.

It works on my Windows 8.1.

Not just Spelunky either, but all my games work with Windows 8.1 so far.

I'll get right on it, boss. Wanna clean install an OS along with me for the sake of solidarity?

It's not that it doesn't work, it's just that whenever I try to Alt+Tab out of it, change it to windowed mode, or change the resolution it crashes.

Oh my bad.

I have never had this issue occur to me regardless though, but I only tried going to window mode so I can't say for certain.

Also getting a crash to desktop in Windows 8.1. And twice now during the daily challenge, too, which is especially annoying. Never had the game crash at all before this week, and haven't changed anything else apart from upgrading to 8.1. I'm not running on multiple monitors or anything either, just a regular laptop. Steam's Big Picture window does seem to steal focus right before it crashes though, and then the game goes down when I try to alt-tab back.

Hadn't seen this in quite a while, and assumed it had been fixed, but just had it happen again. Steam stole focus, then Spelunky crashed when I tried to alt-tab back. Another daily challenge run lost. Annoying.

I've had success changing the default resolution in the config file as well as making it windowed, so that the whole "stealing focus" or alt-tabbing thing isn't a problem. Not an ideal solution, but it works.

It's more about your PC config i guess.
Running on 8.1 with no any problems.

What are the things to config? Where are they in the settings?

I'm not talking about settings.

i had that problem. making a desktop shortcut of spelunky.exe and setting the campatibility version to windows 7 fixed the problem for me

This worked for me and hopefully it will work for you too, Click on the folder, go to OS--> Pogram Files (x86)--> Steam--> SteamApps--> Common--> Spelunky After you open the Spelunky folder, right click the icon of the golden thing and click troubleshoot compatability and use the reccomended setup. Let me know how this works out for you guys.
