I imagine it's possible to do solo with the hired hands, but those little guys are rather stupid and untrustworthy. Leave them alone for a second and they'll either get themselves killed or find a way to kill you.
Also, giving the hired hand the scepter won't necessarily get you insta-killed. You can prepare the scepter and eggplant near the exit on 4-1, and keep the hired hand in a hole that he can't escape until you have the level cleared out. When ready, bring him to the exit and place any bodies away from where you'll be standing. Then even if he fires before you go into the exit, it won't be toward you. At the beginning of 4-2, if he fires right away, hopefully it'll be toward something that doesn't drag the bubble through you. If your reaction time is quick enough, though, you could potentially avoid it. Ideally, quick thinking could allow you to get into position to put down the eggplant and whip him before he kills you. It's obviously very risky, though.
