Cool Minor Gameplay stuff You've Discovered
What are some cool things or gameplay mechanics you have you discovered yourself, even if it is common knowedge?

(1) You can take a picture of yourself with the camera (try it by quickly turning and clinging to an edge)

(2) The best way to kill enemies attacking from above is to whip while facing away from them.

(3) When jumping, you can't whip and cling on to the edge at the same time (clinging doesn't 'interrupt' the whipping motion). Though I still always expect this to work.

(4) The arrow is a great projectile. It's better than the rock, skull, or pot. It kills scorpions on first impact and the broken arrow is great for safely setting off dynamite and breaking pots.

(5) The overall best projectile however is a corpse or damsel: it's enormous, it hugs the walls, and it absorbs arrows (so you don't get kiled by the ricochet).

(6) When juggling items, bring the damsel last. It's much more of a pain to find a safe spot for a damsel than for a pickaxe / key / statue.

(7) Listen for bats on the dark levels. This is a really cool design feature.

(8) You can squeeze past sliding blocks by pushing them near but not over an edge. You can then use them as platforms or simply to avoid them blocking another passageway.

(9) You can be killed by a random UFO explosion on the ice levels. When it first happened, it looked like I spontaneously exploded. It took me awhile to figure out what happened.

(10) Don't run in the black market because the boomerang guys will turn the entire level against you.

(11) Climbing gloves are awesome for catching fireflies.

(12) The music will tell you how much time is left before the ghost shows up (it would be sweet if they made each song exactly 2:30 long)

(13) Check for future falling spiders below you when running around in the mines

(14) When mining with bombs, there are cases where a bomb will entirely destroy the jewel, if it is placed too close.

(15) Make sure you have the paste and the eye of udjat before exiting the mines.

(16) You get rewarded for damsels no matter what exit you use. In particular, always rescue the damsel before committing suicide on the giant stone head level.

(17) As in nethack, the best way to kill giant spiders and bees is often along a narrow corridor. The mattock comes in handy for this.

(18) If you buy a mattock, the game will automatically spawn a snake level immediately afterwards. XD

(19) When there's nothing nearby, you can set off arrow traps with a mouse.

(20) Olmec will randomly kill you if you are jetpacking while 'hugging' him. This feels like a bug.

(21) You can get infinate health from a mummy using a capalla by eating the acid

(22) The sliding eye blocks in the temple are apparently considered "landscape" and a bomb will destroy it even if is shielded by a wall.

(23) The blades come out of the Tiki trap one side at a time.

(24) The alligator men seem to function exactly the same as a teleporter, with the same sort of hazards.

(25) Ducking behind a corpse is good protection from flies.

(26) A corpse also provides absolute safety from arrows, in any direction.

(27) A fire man, like dynamite, will set off a bomb immediately. There is no need to time it.

(28) Real men whip boomerangs. They are sort of like the arrow traps fo the jungle.

(29) A red frog about to explode, if it lands in water, will come back to life.

Nice list, but you'll want to remove #14, because it's not accurate. Gems cannot be destroyed by bombs. I'm thinking that either a falling block fell on the gems that you thought were destroyed by a bomb, or they simply fell to a location that you missed, or were obscured by another object, like a corpse.

Yeah, you're right, I just gave it a shot. They must've been disappearing for other reasons, maybe blasted into me.

(21) Being able to run or walk or jump and hang onto the edge (without dropping your item) feels like it would be the most useful skill ever. I am pretty inconsistent and still have to walk to ledges.

(22) ... a large part because hanging onto an edge and simply pressing down is a quick way to do a controlled descent as you will automatically grab onto a lower ledge at the same horizontal location without taking fall damage regardless of height.

(23) It is much easier (ie, almost impossible to screw up) to do the ledge hang if there is a wall for you to "bounce" off and block you forward movement, ie, if you were running along a pipe that suddenly turns downwards.

(24) If a caveman is chasing you you can duck (but not cling) behind a 1 block ledge and he'll run over you. This is an obscure reason to run, fall, turn, fall close to but NOT cling to an edge.

(25) It is actually possible to dash-jump-rope-climb rope, but only if there is a ceiling less than 6 blocks above you (the lower the better). This is useful for certain temple layouts.

(26) You CAN whip arrow traps 2 blocks away, but only if you are falling at sufficient speed (so it doesn't strike your toes first).

You can use the shotgun, a web gun or a freeze ray to jump 1 block higher than you otherwise would be able to by shooting at the same time as you jump. It will cause knockback but will also propel you upwards.
The mothership laser gun will work in similar fashion but a lot less safe to use.

There is a split second at the beginning of every level where you can't move ... it's a good time to take in your surroundings and decide, left or right?

Best of all, it's hefty enough to knock back and stun shopkeepers.

You can rope into spikes without dying.
You can also float into spikes using a cape (and not die).

No joke.

and you can parachute down into spikes without dying

and you can jetpack down into spikes without dying if you're descending VERY slowly (i think… i wouldn't recommend this one)

and you can do the ledge overhang into spikes without dying as long as the spikes are 1 block diagonal (forward+down) from you

- It is possible to avoid a bomb in a two block ditch by simply jumping. This is a way to get those damsels or crates in the mines (you know, the ones embedded right below the exit door) without using a rope.

- real me kill frogs and spiders falling directly from above with the whip. ... or cowardly boys who panic and mash the whip button.

- The whip timing for this game is an enormous frustration and a bit of game design genius. Real men run full speed through whipped creatures. You have to whip REAALLLY early since the first part of the whip animation is above and behind you.

- And what the damn hell is up with scorpions being able to jump to AVOID being whipped? Like, while facing away from you? I've seen it happen with my own eyes many times

Never underestimate the combat capabilities of rope, and I mean NEVER!
Earlier this week I finally managed to reach, and subsequently defeat Yama. Shortly into his floating head form I was out of bombs and down to minimal health... but you know what I did have? A safe block to hang under which he kept passing over, and about 30-40 ropes thanks to a jetpack in level 1-2 or 1-3. Today I had to take out Anubis without any bombs and he kept hovering over me. You know what took him down? Ropes! If a flying boss enemy keeps hovering over your head and you've been able to stockpile ropes thanks to jetpacks or climbing gloves then you just rope-spam them to death!

I disagree. Arrows are much more likely to hit you on the rebound than any other projectile, and they take off two damage instead of one when they hit. I pretty much only use arrows when no other projectile is available, and then mostly just for setting off traps.

(6) When juggling items, bring the damsel last. It's much more of a pain to find a safe spot for a damsel than for a pickaxe / key / statue.

I'm not sure I agree with this. The damsel's more important than the idol, and the ghost may force you to pick one. The Udjat Eye is more valuable than a damsel, though, since it makes finding the Black Market quite likely and it will (rarely) allow you to find interesting items in walls.

(8) You can squeeze past sliding blocks by pushing them near but not over an edge. You can then use them as platforms or simply to avoid them blocking another passageway

Do be aware, though, that if you go down a ladder this way, you may not be able to go back up.

(10) Don't run in the black market because the boomerang guys will turn the entire level against you.

Not sure what running has to do with that. Do beware, though, that you can end up running into a tiki trap if you're not watching where you're going.

(11) Climbing gloves are awesome for catching fireflies.

I usually skip buying them because I'm hoping to get a jetpack, and buying the climbing gloves takes away money I'll need for the jetpack and bombs. I may buy them if I'm at or past the Black Market and there's no jetpack to be found.

Speaking of the jetpack, if I come across one and I cannot afford it, and it's clear I still won't be able to by the end of the level, I will steal it. It's the only item I would rather steal than pass up.

(12) The music will tell you how much time is left before the ghost shows up (it would be sweet if they made each song exactly 2:30 long)

The music continues while the game is paused, though. Also, unfortunately, the music doesn't seem nearly as reliable for this as it was in the Classic version.

(15) Make sure you have the paste and the eye of udjat before exiting the mines.

One way to get paste if you haven't found it yet: kill a giant spider. Takes four jumps with spiked boots; eight (EDIT: actually ten, I think) without them. Can be rather risky, though!

(17) As in nethack, the best way to kill giant spiders and bees is often along a narrow corridor. The mattock comes in handy for this.
I usually just jump on 'em, especially if I have the spiked boots. I also throw stuff at 'em. Of course, if I have the shotgun or freeze ray, I just use that.

Not really part of the gameplay per se, but if you beat the game with a parachute you glide down instead of landing with a thud with the treasure before your score comes up.
