Do you kill the shopkeeper?
I apologize if this has been discussed at length before. I was wondering if people consistently finished the game starting at 1-1 without killing the shopkeepers. I am not concerned with high scores. I see the obvious advantages of killing the shopkeeper but it creates a new gameplay mechanic which I find totally awful.

I usually don't kill the shopkeepers pre-black market, but if there's some really nice items, I'll make an exception.

I do, however, kill the shopkeepers in the black market. Every single time. Not only does it mean I don't have to pay the high cost of the ankh, I also get to loot the entire black market, and it basically guarantees me a source of shotguns from there on out.

I've only very recently started doing it (on purpose, anyway :P), but I still don't do it that often. I find the game more fun without it, but it can be an interesting and advantageous change of pace for sure. I enjoy completing the game more than going for high scores (though I am starting to work on that a bit), so I prefer not to kill them most of the time.

On daily challenges, if it's worth it (some bombs and some pieces of equipment) then the shopkeepers die. Even if it's on 1-2, if not, they definitly die on the black market. Getting a shotgun very early is real nice, and you have no more excuse not to go for the vaults other then running out of bombs. Also the potential of getting a shotgun on every next floor is pretty good. Especially after the ankh sacrifice and after using the scepter on the golden door. Being able to have a shotgun on the later levels is really good. Also the fact that starting from the ice caves, shopkeepers don't take a lot to kill. On the Ice caves they like to jump into the abyss, on the temple they can get pierced by a tiki trap on the exit kill themselves and on hell you have spikeballs and what not.

Definitely. Oh wait, I thought you asked if I get killed by the shopkeeper.

No, I don't kill them. I'm nowhere good enough to be able to do it without dying instantly.

I kill them from the very first shop I see. It usually goes well, but that's also a reason as to why I find the mines the hardest. It's the most difficult to get to the exit.

Totally worth it for high scores, but it takes a lot of practice. You're better off practicing robbing the black market like Radioactive because the reward is so high, and you never have to buy the Ankh. Not as difficult as it seems.

Also, I always recommend buying paste in the store when you see it. It's one of the most useful utilities and you never know if you'll come across a giant spider on your path. It makes killing shop keepers in tricky locations easy.

I always do once I hit the black market. I will before that if there is something I really want in the shops or there is a gun, because it is a lot harder to deal with the mines if you have pissed off shopkeepers.

I usually kill them. Out of 8 times I've beaten yama, I think only one time was without killing the shopkeeps :p I think it's easier once you get a hang on killing them, shotgun is real nice in the later levels and as someone mentioned earlier, once you reach ice caves most shopkeepers tend to kill themselves - if not, a properly timed sticky bomb does the trick :)

I tend to kill them from the first one as long as there's a safe way to do it. Or at least I did until I found out (entirely by accident) that you can sell the idol to them for $10,000 instead of the $5,000 you get for exiting the level with it. Now I try to wait until the black market before killing any, unless there's a must-have item like the jetpack.

Maybe I should restrain myself though. After over 500 attempts I have still not beaten the game; most of my runs end premeturely due to shopkeeper. I only make it out of the mines once in every 3 or 4 tries because the bastards are really difficult to kill in the mines. From the jungle onwards they become a lot easier to deal with.

I kill them every run. I used to die all the time from them, but after a while it starts getting a lot easier.

I'd like to add to my previous stating the following:
If I have a fairly "fresh" mattock in my hands a long with the udjat eye, I'm also a bit more hesitant to kill them in the mines, read they need to have a bit better loot then a bomb bag and spike shoes for example. I'll still try to kill them at the black market no matter what though...

It there's lots of bombs, a jetpack or a cape I'll kill them, sometimes I'll do it for the mattock.

I usually kill them in the black market, but every now and again I won't and it's interesting how the tension relaxes without them. But I do seem to do better with a potential shotgun at the bottom of every level.

Same with me, I suppose the fact that the shopkeepers are looking for you keeps you on your toes, and more carefull about your actions.
