Spelunky
How I play Spelunky
Start up game.
Die repeatedly for 15 to 30 minutes in the most bizarre ways.
Curse the game.
Log out.
Repeat the same tomorrow.

Are you from the past or have you just never heard of controllers before?
Controllers..controllers...those things that came with the Atari 2600. Had one stick and a red button?

Never heard of em.

Yes and yes

yes I'm ancient and controllers are for the kids with consoles ;-P and flight sims ;-) this game cannot compare to midight mansion.... to show my age and to prove I used a joypad a few times... it cannot even compare to bubble bobble :-)

If Spelunky's controls give you that much trouble, I'm at a loss at how you play any other PC game. Hell, Bubble Bobble only uses two less buttons.
All controls can be mapped to whatever keys you wish, the game can also work with any controller that can be connected to, and recognised, by a computer, provided you have the needed sotware to use that controller. So controls can't be an issue.

The game is obviously designed to be hard, and I wouldn't fault a game when it was purposely engineered to be difficult.

As for how I play? It ranges on how much effort I want to spend on trying to win; I can play the game for several hours or justdrop it after the first few deaths. The mindset one is in affects how much is played. Most of the time when I play games like Spelunky, I find it hard to get angry when I lose simply because I know that losing a lot is part of the game.

I agree with this a lot. I play a lot of rougelikes (Binding of Isaac, Teleglitch, Nuclear Throne, and The Pit, just to name the ones I have one Steam) and I understand that they're intended to be difficult and you're going to die a lot before you get anywhere. That's why I don't understand why so many people rage about Spelunky's difficulty, it's not meant to be a game you can beat in one sitting.

Fall damage is something I always forget about. :(
Fall damage and thrown rocks bouncing back. So many deaths.
and fall damage seems so arbitrary. sometimes i fall and take damage but other times it seems i fall even farther and dont. Is there some sort of tumble thing going on?
Welcome to a roguelike game, you're not gonna win in the first 30 minutes..

Only a certain challenge for this game is attractive that can not stop it even.
In the past that was exactly how I played, a few games until I ragequit, but now I play a few games until I win... or still ragequit after a few tries :D

Some days I will beat the alternate ending more than once, some days I will keep failing miserably. That is all part of the fun, all my favorite games inspire that love/hate relationship.
