If you want to play a manly game with manly graphics, try Dark Souls 2. It's on sale
Graphically, I can't say much. It's a matter of opinion, I guess. I think it's pretty and fits the game, but you may disagree. Even if you dislike its graphics, give it a try if you like hard platform games. It's worth it even when full price.
The combat is pretty much whipping and jumping on top of enemies. There are some weapons, such as shotguns and boomerangs, but what really stands out is the variety of enemies. Some jump towards you, some spits poison on you, some shoot stuff at you, some eat you, and so on. Each enemy requires a different strategy, which is nice and keeps the game fresh.
The game have a lot of traps as well. So, if you consider all the enemies, all the items and all the traps, you'll have a lot of gameplay before you get bored. Really. I have 158 hours and I'm still not bored.
The only thing I strongly dislike is a time limit and ghost. I like to play games at my own pace.
When I first encountered it I was thinking that ghost appearance indicates that exit is nearby, but after I read some posts on a forum I found that it is time limit.
This knowledge alone is turning me away from the game. When I played it I was like "wow i want to play it, I want to rescue all the damsels, I want to explore every corner and collect all the gems!", but now when I learned about time limit its like "meh I have to skip everything and I'll fail anyway because I need to hurry".
Sure, people could still go fast and reckless by choice, but then there tends to be a bit too much regret when you die: "why didn't I take that slower?" "maybe I should be more carefull." The preasure is an excuse to die and have fun doing it.
Its a hardcore rougelike platformer, people even complaining that its too hard, i would not recommend this to kids. But if you care so much about it then dont buy, i dont see a problem here.
It's a game for grown ups able to control their nerves.
