Is the ghost + gems really necessary?
I've been playing this game for a while, and I can't find any good reason on how the game benefits from having the so called "ghost mining/running" technique. I'm fine with the soft time limit, but achieving great scores requires luring the ghost into gems, which, I think, it's not fun at all.

Ghost mining is not so difficult to execute when you are experienced in the game. It is just time consuming, and, for me, very boring. Removing this tactic would result in faster runs and preserving the fun. Without diamonds, that single pile of gold might make a difference in the leaderboards. Getting every treasure is difficult and fun. Waiting for the ghost, not so much.

What do you guys think? Do you enjoy ghosting?

You need ghosting if you want enough money to legitimately buy more than one item from the black market. Otherwise the only option would be to rob it.

Actually, you can get more than enough if you get the Mattock and Udjat Eye from the mines. Then just dig up gems and gold to your heart's content. However, you wont be able to buy the ENTIRE shop. I've ended up with the Ankh, a Jetpack, and a a few other goodies just from this, which is usually more than enough to get pretty far.

Actually, mattock, Udjat Eye AND ghosting you can get even more...

Apparently, people think grinding is not part of this game, yet it is. I don't even know how this technique works, but by the sound of it, it sounds quite silly i.m.o. But, if it's an integral part of the game, y'know, nothing can be done with it.

It's only required if you are competing for the top score; not for anything else.

Back to the key point - Ghost ... I don't think it makes sense at early stages. 1-1 ... really? I also find it a bit annoying being a beginner. Especially since there was no comment on it in the game ... it just showed up ... and DEATH! How does the gohst play into all of this? Where was the part in the tutorial that talked about this? Was this an afterthought that somehow made it into production? Odd, odd, odd ... and not so fun. The rest is pretty cool though.

The original Spelunky (now the free demo) also has the ghost, so she got into the HD remake, too.

Actually if you're ghosting it must mean you're aiming for a high score. If you're aiming for a high score it would be much much more profitable to rob every shopkeeper you see.
SN2TS Dec 30, 2013 @ 9:12am
Robbing shopkeepers may be profitable, but lowers the chances of finishing the run, so it is more a thing for the Daily Challenge. Ghosting in the mine levels and then buying the complete gear is a valid strategy for just finishing the game, including beating Olmec and Yama.

If you fail ghosting in Mines 1-1, it's not a big deal. If an angry shopkeep kills you at Temple 4-3, your run is ruined.

I want longer maps to go deeper and deeper, possibly with randomized preconstructed rooms and caves. I want exploration to be the main goal, without ghost and any time limit. I have Terraria in mind when writing this.
It's hardly doable to rescue damsel when ghost is chasing you. This game is not about challenge its about luck. It is about expecting randomization will create easy maps and monster placements so you can run to the exit and be lucky to find one fast enough before ghost get to you.

I agree with QuantumSAM and Bacardi. The game loses something when I can't take the time to figure out my route. I'm on my way to the exit and the ghost shows up to block my way and kill me. Yeah, that's fun. There was absolutely nothing in the trailer or on the game info page that suggested you better hurry up or you're gonna die. In fact it said "you'll have complete freedom while you navigate". Complete freedom takes a nose dive when a timer is tossed in.

It's not the game that is too difficult or random.

It's your fault. 2bad4Spelunky. Go back to japanese MMORGS pls

Then play Terraria. It's complete different game with crafting, an inventory and a lot of sandbox grinding.

Says that after one hour of gameplay experience. Have you even passed the tutorial?

Simple. If he hadn't that teleport item in store just a few blocks from starting point.
My point was not the game is difficult. My point I was expecting more than just a mario-like platformer from this game. I was wrong.
I know I bad at it because I've just started to play and since I've seen how one supposed to play it I don't feel I want to play it at all. How is running and skipping everything is supposed to be fun? All these gems and damsels turn out to be just pointless fillers.

Such FAIL.
very WRONG
WOW

He's speedrunning. I showed you those videos to prove you that you CAN complete levels and beat the game without worrying about the ghost. Do you want a good no-Teleport speedrun? I can post it.

You can get the damsels and the gems no problem. You can do it within 2:30 minutes? YES you can.
Are you trying to? It doesn't look like it.
