How long?
How long does it take to complete the game on average?

Depends on your definition of 'complete'. Beating Olmec? Beating Hell? Finishing the game with a certain score?

It depends on the player, mostly. Each person progresses through Spelunky at their own pace.

If you mean how long a single successful run takes, typically anywhere from 30 minutes to about an hour, perhaps more if you do a lot of ghostrunning.

just safely beating olmec takes around 20 mins for casual player I'd say.

Damn. Dats some money for a short game. :(

but it's replayable + it will take you about at least 10-15 horus before u finish it for the 1st time + there's more to discover
tbh it's hands down top 5 game in steam, well worth the money

It's not a game that you beat once and then never touch again. It's a roguelike (or highly inspired by roguelikes if you're picky about that term) which is a genre built around replayability. If you've played games like Binding of Isaac or FTL, it's kind of like that.

Also, it can take a player many hours of gameplay to become skilled enough just to beat Olmec, which is the game's "easy" ending.

Assuming they have played the game for 12+ hours and attained the skill to consistently pull that off.

It is a hard game. You don't start playing it and just beat it in 20 minutes... you have to play it, and play it and play it to get good, and then maybe you have a run where you beat it.

This statement is worded rather deceptively. : P

No one is going to pick up the game for the first time and beat it in 20 minutes. A "casual" player would undoubtedly need to play for dozens of hours just to make it to the boss for the first time, let alone beat him. As has been said, it's a platformer with roguelike elements, and you'll probably die and restart in a new cave system a hundred or so times before managing to complete a run. There are lots of ways to die along with permadeath, so you'll need to develop the skill and knowledge of how to safely traverse the dangerous levels before having a chance at beating the game. Even a skilled player will not be able to consistently win, and for every time they survive a run, there will be many more when they don't make it. The game's randomized levels and many secrets also make it quite replayable, so even after you "win", you'll likely want to come back to play more.

(not ref link, just spelunky id url)

That site is fairly accurate and it shows different types of runs for time. It at least consistently gives you a general idea of what to expect.

it is sort-of long to beat the game but it will take you lots of practice to get good

I think he meant a single run from beginning to end, not counting the many hours and many failed runs it typically takes a player to become skilled and knowledgeable enough to reach Olmec in the first place.

I'd say that a player that has only recently become good enough to get to Olmec probably takes 30-40 minutes to reach and defeat Olmec. Personally, I always aim for Hell, and my successful Hell runs tend to clock in at about an hour long because I usually do some ghostrunning (which is kiting the ghost over gems to turn those gems into diamonds, so I'll get a better score) as well.

I sure hope so because I have played over 5 hours and have only reached mine 2 twice. And was immediately killed each time.

Apparently, I'm horrible.
