Is this Artificial Difficulty?
I know Im a ♥♥♥♥♥ for whining about a game's difficulty, but I think this game would be a lot better if they made some of the aspects a reasonable challenge. The easiest example I can come up with is the shopkeepers. At first I thought they were there to discourage theft, but it seems like most of their functions are more about making this game absurdly difficult. having a shotgun (the strongest early weapon in the game) sounds to be fair, but coupled with extreme speed and an annoying throw mechanic, they seem more like bosses than regular enemies. Not only that, but if you accidently dent one of their shops, those bosses will be posted on patrol in their shops, instead of standing still. This means they open fire on sight, which can be out-of-the blue. If you are starting to agree with me, may I remind you that if you anger one, shopkeepers will spawn at the exit to each level. Seriously, why is that even there. Wouldnt it be more fun if robbing the shop was something that you could do without permanent serious reprecautions. It would be cool if they had shotguns, but didnt move without acceleration (seriously they dont accel/deccel at all), and didnt jump around and gang up on you if you try to progress through the game. There are many other things in this game that are just stupidly hard, but the shopkeeper is the most frequent reminder of my punishment for liking roguelikes.

At first, when you're just starting to play the game you try your hardest not to anger the shopkeepers. You just need to get accustomed to the game then try to learn how to rob shopkeepers, their movements, strategies for killing shopkeepers awaiting you at the exit, etc.

I used to not mess with shopkeepers ever, then I started to kill them starting in the black market, now even in the caves if they have a great item I want I'll kill them.

It's easier (not easy ever) to kill them in the black market and in the caves, where you have a lot of room, but other than that their haphazard movement is too difficult. I'm not saying their unbeatable, but I think it would be more fun if they were easier. That's the key thing, I think it would be better if they changed them. I'm not saying their too hard that it isnt fun, but if they were easier it would make players engage them more, and generate more conflicts.

Ah, was having a great pre-hell run earlier. Was in the Black Market gearing up.. then the shopkeepers in the black market all went berserk for absolutely 0 reason that I could see.

Gotta' love Spelunky lolol.

One time as soon as I spawn in a temple world, a thug threw a boomerang at me, that knocked me out into a tiki trap, that stunned me again, immediately after I came back up a bat (was aggro'd from me flying) came to finish me off. I had like 7 health too, and good items.

Gotta' love Spelunky lolol.
