I'm a huge fan of The Dark Descent. And yet, I liked A Machine for Pigs. It's not a action game, it's a story. Plain and simple. It was never supposed to be TDD 2.

I really enjoyed the story in AMFP, and found it much better polished than the one in TDD

It was sooo bad..not even scary...

Yup, I agree with ineseri. I sat on the fence for awhile with Amnesia AMFP and finally gave in and bought it on sale. I enjoyed the story as well.
Maybe in Amnesia 3 they could have the best of both games, but a whole new story and locale.

It's not a bad game. Just because it wasn't very scary doesn't make it bad. Did you listen to the story at all? Did you even try to immerse yourself and let the atmosphere get to you? I did, and in the end I really enjoyed the game.

The scares? A little weak. The story? So much better than TDD. Overall, I'd only reccomend this game if you're set on buying it or leaning towards it. If you're feeling a little doubt, just go and watch a Lets Play or Walkthrough unless it's on sale.

I agree, pigmen is something out of a cheesy sci fi movie that simply has no place in horror. I actually laughed out loud at some of the "scary" parts of the game.

This just in: Personal Opinion Is Just That!

I'm going to have to counter your opinion OP. I absolutely adored A Machine for Pigs, and I absolutely loved The Dark Descent and the Penumbra trilogy. I'm capable of appreciating each game as its own unique experience, and I did not expect a Machine For Pigs to be exactly like The Dark Descent.

I think almost all of the complaints that have been leveled against A Machine for Pigs can be summed up with "expectations". You expected one thing and were dissapointed, and I expected brilliant story, dark/tense atmosphere, amazing music, and a soul-wrenching existential experience. I got what I wanted at least.

I did enjoy The Dark Descent tho, A Machine For pigs was very good for me aswell

How is it an action game?

No, the game isn't as scary in terms of the atmosphere and creepy foreboding that the first game had, but instead it goes for something a bit more cerebral. Much better writing and story, mainly.

And this time the ending didn't suck.

Some people wanted the same game but with a "2" on it. AMFP isn't any of that, it's another kind of game that i loved. And i still love TDD too.

Did anything in the history of Amnesia suggest that would happen? Big things with big axes aren't scary, that's dumb horror, not intelligent horror.
A Machine For Pigs is all about immersion in story and atmosphere rather than gameplay mechanics like the first one - that isn't for everybody, but it doesn't make it a bad game, just different.

Personally, I loved both.
