I just can't like this game. Aside the fact this is not a title for legacy Thief fans, its just a poorly executed in itself.
Beautiful level design and detail, but feels like a benchmark program that you have been dropped into and can walk about in. You can't actually do that much with the environments around you that are 'thief like' - the open world-ish side to the game that it tries to pull off is a lie.
Stealth and AI is acceptible but again you are confined by the level design; for example, In the open city Stonemarket, there is a side mission to steal something from a local doctors. To get in you must open a window, inside there are 2 guards, 1 civilian NPC but you are tied into 2 rooms and one corridor... if you are seen and need to hide... where do you go? You can't dash out the window... you are running into room 1, then chased into room 2, then into the corridor, dodge, back to room 2, back to room 1... your ♥♥♥♥ed basically. To open the window you have to mash the use key, which you can't do in (shudder) 'combat mode' anyway... Who thought this was a good idea? Garrett, the master thief, trapped by a window he just opened two minutes earlier... Really?
Every action is a cumbersome longwinded animation of Garretts busy hands, rummaging through drawers, opening doors, peeping round corners, lunging up rooftops, opening randomly placed wardrobes and cupboards to save the game.... on top of not being able to quickly open anything like a total tard, actually makes you feel like a bumbling gimp in a tight leather suit, not some master thief.
I tried to like it, I started the game again and again and I just can't bring myself like it... Other than the impressive visuals, the gameplay, well its just a bit shit. I don't find any fun or satisfaction in sneaking about or climbing up the clearly marked white bits of the city.
Developers should have kept it simple, stuck to the roots of Thief 1,2 and even 3 a bit more. Made it a quicker, more punchy and fast paced sneak in, sneak out. Risk vs equipment vs partolling guards.
Thief fans of old, definitely avoid. New thief players - Honestly? Buy the Dishonored collection, despite being a different game it does the whole thiefy thang a lot better than this.
