Thief

Why i think the old thiefs arent actually that great
so after a long time hearing people say "the old thiefs are so much better." i decided to buy thief 2 and thief deadly shadows, are they really all that better so far ive only completed the first mission of metal age and i gotta say the stealth system is... i cant think of an adjective right now but when your beside a huge post thing and a guard is staring right at you from 5 feet away, the guard should see you. also so many people had said that the thief 4 levels are extremly linear so are the levels in thief 2 ( i look at some other levels on youtube btw because i couldnt stand that the resolution was so small). lastly difficulty another thing everyone says is that thief 4 is super easy so are the others again 5 feet away standing up right behind guards never detected.

The first level on Thief 2 is pretty much a tutorial, I'd recommend playing the game on the highest difficulty since you are given more objectives. As for the resolution, you should download Tafferpatcher if you haven't yet. You shouldn't judge the game and say it's linear just because you watched somebody else play it on youtube. Thief 1 and 2 maps are much bigger than Thiaf's and they don't have cutscenes or loading screens, there's usually plenty of exploration in each level and you should be able to reach and complete objectives in different ways.

The originals are awfully old. There was really nothing like them at the time. Not sure why people would evern want to compare them with something of today. I guess it helps if you actually played them originally, I did and was floored by them.

"See you 5 feet away"? Maybe not... youre dressed in dark, and it's very dark in many places in the game. Sometimes they notice you... sometimes not. the eyes are funny, they sometimes just don't see things even in real life. I think they kind of captured that with the AI. Many of those guards are half asleep anyway! lol

I can see your point with the eyes i usually dont take that type of thing into concideration cuz i have really weird eyes (i see 30 fps as 60fps and also i see things more bright then others do and my glasses make everything bigger) so usually i can notice dark things in the dark

Stealth in the other thief games were more multi faceted than what has been presented in this edition of thief and relied more on trial and error, listening for particular sounds rather than looking at the alert meter of a particular enemy. The enemies also tended to be more punishing (particularly in Thief I and II) which added to the complexity and difficulty of a level.

I also really liked that not every guard and swordsman is an enemy (Thief II is an exception where all of them are enemies). This makes certain places quite easy to explore especially if you want to get a feel of the mission.

To really understand the mechanics of the older thief games, I really recommend playing the tutorial missions (In thief I and Deadly Shadows). Unfortunately There is no tutorial in Thief II which essentially makes the game a continuation of the original game. As for the darkness issue, it is supposed to be pitch black meaning they really cannot see what is in front of them.

Each mission in the older games were designed to have more exploration which meant there was more than one way to complete an objective. In most cases, you can complete your objectives in any order you wish (Return To The Cathedral is an exception to this). Unfortunately many of the objectives make certain playstyles in the current Thief game impossible to achieve (Again, Return To The Cathedral is a good example of this).

In this version of thief, all the levels have been quite linear and although while there is some exploration it doesn't allow the freedom of movement like in the older games. The only exception to this rule I feel is the Bank Heist mission. If anything resembled an older style mission in the new version, this would be it. Unfortunately the size of this mission is comparable to a medium size mission (probably around the size of Eavesdropping or Running interference)

At the end of the day it is how you adapt to the mechanics of the older games and play the game that is most comfortable to you.

My eyes aren't the best either. I strain them too much playing games like this! lol

Another thing that makes it work is the era it's set in. torches, gas lamps.. . those are nothing like modern electric lights. Light everywhere these days (makes it difficult for star watchers like me)! back then when it was night, like Tavmen said above, it's pitch black. I'd love to take my telescope back in time! The games aren't perfect with lighting, but there was literally nothing like these. "Dark Project" was the perfect name for that original game.

deadly shadows was cooler then the 1st two but thief 2014 blows that game out of the water....thief 2014 is a blast to play and very well made.

Those games were a product of thier time. Back in the day, there was nothing like them on PC, and stealth games themselves were a new genre. Compared with kind of level design, visuals, AI etc today's games can achieve, then yes they are primitive crap. But they were innovative and unique in their day.
Vik Jun 7, 2015 @ 2:58am
Yeah, indeed, compared both to old games and modern games, Teef 2014 is indeed primitive crap. Good thing they won't waste anybody's time with a sequel.
Mr Hanky Jun 7, 2015 @ 3:22am
That cringe though, there is more thought and attention to detail in one level in Thief 2 than in the entire Teef, if you prefer Teef that's your problem I guess.
Vik Jun 7, 2015 @ 3:39am
Yeah, we can't account for bad taste. Not that it matters though, people like the OP don't deserve a quality game like the Thief trilogy. They should stick to linear crap like Teef 2014.

Interesting. I really struggle to understand the mindset of people who consider modern games to be de facto superior to 90s titles, to a point where they don't even think that comparison between them is in any way possible, and automatically disregard any claim to the opposite as a result of nostalgia or something like that..
Tis just something that I keep seeing again and again and again. Someone will write something of that sort without a second thought, and someone else will agree and take it for the fact. Hell, I even remember some guy from EM saying something like "ya know, ya might have thought that old game was good when ya played it back in the day, but then ya come back to it today it's actually pretty bad" in one those interviews released prior to TEEF.
Mr Hanky Jun 7, 2015 @ 9:26am
It's all about graphics really and 'da new ♥♥♥♥ yo!', if Teef was exactly the same as it is now but had the graphics of Thief 1, 2 none of these people would still say 'it's a good game'. Sad that gaming got hijacked by twits.

if you dont like graphics and cut scenes, then indie games would probably be your thing....thief 2014 made alot of money on consoles and pc...its still making money now...we should see the announcemeent coming soon for the next game...hooray

and yes...there is many times with movies and other media that i thought was the greatest thing ever back in the day but today when i check it out again, it wasnt as good as i thought it was...i think the problem is, alot of steam folks just played thief 1 and 2 in the last year....that`s why there is such hate for this one....1999 was a long time ago, i`ve moved on to better things like thief 2014 , its a blast and its loaded with over 40+ hours of content...all loot and expansions...over a 100+ hrs of content.
