As long as you don't kill off your entire family, you're free to reduce the number of mouths to feed if you must. Bear in mind that this will lock out one of the "good" endings and its corresponding Steam achievement for that playthrough, which requires all family members to remain alive.

Ive had this one epic Moment when I didnt have much money; Everybody was sick and hungry and Ive had to decide for one family member... Im so cruel ;_; Ive chosen my wife instead of my son :( At least ive got my niece now :D

I don't know if you can let too many die. On my very first playthrough of this game, I failed on Day 6, with the ending saying all my family was dead. However, I'm pretty sure my wife had actually survived. I guess I just didn't have enough family left to keep the authorities happy.
