Hiring Spike

I found the dog hireling named Spike. How do I free him from his cage and hire him? All I can do is look at him and that's it.

He's part of the Warden promotion quest, I'm not sure if there's any other way to free him.

does this mean you cannot get him as companion, if you dont have a ranger?

i heard he can detect secrets. kind of looked forward to it. crap.

I managed to "hire" him from the cage with out a ranger in my party.

do you have open slots? you cannot hire him if your companion slots are filled

you can release another in that slot you need to get him ? maybe fire the cook?

yep, just came and hired him. without any quests.

what Warden promotion quest are you talking about?

I hired him and the only thing i can do to him is pet him, after a while i released him.

My problem is I had to fire Spike to pick up another npc. I went back to Spike's cage to re hire him after completing the quest but I cannot get him back. I do hope he isn't lost to me forever.

Im not sure you get the option to fire one of your other followers when trying to recruit Spike.

Shouldnt be a problem to get him back if you dismissed him before either, just make sure you have an open spot for him.
And remember, you'll never get an option to fire quest-related companions - so if you have two thats tied to a quest each you won't get to swap them out for new companions.

I know all of this, hence my confusion at not being able to re hire him.

Once you get the dark shard and complete that the dark dragon blessing will spot secret doors if you lost the dog.

There is an elf near some Forrest just outside Karthal, he wants you to track/kill some poachers. You have to get this quest before Spike will join you.

I have the same issue... Did you find a solution ?
