Likely a stupid question (very stupid) but I don't do online co-op, multi-player stuff. . . might there be a single-player mode for obstinate antisocials like myself?

Upsilon Circuit will be online only, free to play... and also, you can only play it once if you are selected. It's kinda like a gameshow in that way, in fact, its only live to watch and play for a few hours each day. So there won't be an offline version.

It's free to play... but you probably wont be selected to play. It's more like a game show you get to watch... imagine Jepoardy or Wheel of Fortune... but an action rpg with perma perma perma death.

sounds like a fun experiment , if you could get twitch involved you might get somewhere with it. we had millions of users involved with twitch plays pokemon and other games where users and their bots decided the poor characters. if you can't get a giant audience like twitch (or other game stream site) you might as well move on to the next project , the entry barrier is too high for casuals who just want to get in, kill stuff, and get out
