Multiplayer ~ Status
This has been a hot-topic in the last 2 weeks so I figured it would be good to have one central point to give information about its status. We will update this over time as we have more to add.
Right now multiplayer is disabled. We are clear and upfront about this in many places. Why is it disabled? Because we decided to go back and change some core things to significantly improve the experience of the game. It was a hard decision, but it was the one we made. If you have not been with us since the beginning, we have had multiplayer since the inception of the game. We learned a tremendous amount from this but came to the point that we needed to change some of our internal work pipelines to increase quality and decrease unnecessary slowdowns. For anyone who has worked with multiplayer, when you add it to the mix you take your bug factor and multiply it by about ten. So we internalized to refine our focuses.
We have decided to focus on features and content first. Some people don't agree with this, but we have a small team, and we've decided this is the best course of action for us. We want to establish and solidify the game in a more controlled environment before adding multiplayer on top of it.
The main reason we have chosen to do this, has to do with skill sets, and coordinating our work. I want to focus on establishing features and work with Jake directly as he then uses those features to ensure they meet the needs for the game. Then, when I move to focus more on multiplayer, Jake can focus on all the content related scripting expanding in sync. While I will most likely be needed here and there to round off little bits, this then allows me to 100% focused on multiplayer instead of split focusing.
Once we cross the multiplayer threshold we will move to focusing our attention on solving issues that occur in the smaller part of the user base (including with Windows XP). We will solve the issues, but we have to prioritize to avoid any more delays.
To reiterate, we are a small team. That means real life can impact us in real ways. The biggest impact most recently had to do with a few unfortunate 3rd party software dependencies. Once we were on Greenlight it was clear we needed to remove those dependencies. This ended up eating significantly more time to remove than we anticipated. We are pushing hard now to catch up, since this work was not in the initial timeline for the game.
We want to make a good game. We are working night and day, every day, to try and get it done as soon as possible. Even when it threatens our own mental health. :)
