Putting aside my nostalgia tinted goggles, I'll start with the things this game got wrong. Most games like this with skill trees and RPG's in particular are bad about forcing you to min-max and powergame and this one is no exception. If anything it's worse than most other examples from the same era cause you can literally make the game unwinnable if you don't know what stats you need and don't. The weapons are also horribly inbalanced against themselves, which is a big draw back, have to knock off points for that since FPS is the primary method of combat and there's a fair amount of it in this game.
Those two complaints aside, this one is incredibly atmospheric, far more than any Bioshock game was ever able to achieve. The limitations of the engine create a crushing sense of isolation and the only contact you have being with entities that cannot be trusted further add to the dread in this game.
I can't be too hard on this one, flaws and all. Cause it did serve as a milestone for much more advanced games in the same vein that looked at the things it did right for inspiration. Definitely worth checking out if you can ignore graphics that haven't aged well.
