Retros guide for getting winrott gl to work
Greetings ladies and gents today i will be showing you how to get winrtoo gl to work on your computer.

First step is to head to this page
http://www.riseofthetriad.dk/RecNews.htm
and look for the post that says "Get the new WinRottGL_Full_v.1.70 'here'.".

Click on the part that says"here" and it will automaticaly download the main zip file which contains the main execuatable for winrottGL.

second step follow this link http://www.riseofthetriad.dk/DL_GlROTT.htm it will redirect you to the glrott downloads page from here we are going to download two files. The two files you need to download are GLdllpack.zip and GLgraphics.zip just simply click on the names to start the download process.

step three
Once you have all the zip files go to where you installed the apogee throwback pack
E: or C: depending on where you installed steam\ProgramFiles\Steam\steamapps\common\ The Apogee Throwback Pack\Rise of the Triad and unzip all three files here. once you have done so simply boot up the winrottGL.exe and click on run winrottgl and you should be good to go :).

I hope this guide helps guys please don't be too harsh on the comments this is my first time writing up a guide :)

This option works with all of the rott titles the dark war, the hunt begins and extreme rott. if these rtl files are in different folders simply copy and paste them into the spot where you extracted winrottgl and in a drop down list that says alternate game levels you should be able to select what set of levels you can play this also work with custom levels that you have made or others that have made for rise of the triad.

Is there a file called gl in the rise of the triad folder in the apogee pack? if not you need to download this zip file and extract it.
GLgraphics.zip

Its odd that peeps are getting errors running winrottgl through steam as I have been using it for awhile now and it seems to work fine.

I wonder if it makes any difference if you set a shortcut and run it that way?. this problem is new to me

We'd been having that same issue when running it through the launcher. Even when colors.ifo is clearly in the files! MUST FIND WORKAROUND!

I think it has something to do with the path that the Throwback Pack launcher is running from when it tries to run WinROTT making WinROTT think it's not running from the directory it's in, but wherever the launcher resides. I've tried changing up the paths in the file to point to the absolute directory that the executable lies in ("D:\Games\Throwback Pack\Rise of the Triad\WinRottGL_Full_v.1.70.exe" for me) and it still can't see colors.ifo even though it's right there. I could just be an idiot when setting the paths, though. Running the executable standalone works flawlessly in Rise of the Triad and Extreme Rise of the Triad, however.

I had the same error message but downloading both GL packs and copying them to the ROTT directory fixed them. (for me at least.)

Just copied one of the GL directories over to D:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\The Apogee Throwback Pack\GL after reinstalling it and still having no luck. It's clearly launching WinROTT in the Throwback Pack directory regardless of where it's actually located:

"Found: D:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\The Apogee Throwback Pack\GL\colors.ifo"

This despite the fact that the winrott exe is actually located in The Apogee Throwback Pack\Rise of the Triad\ and \Extreme Rise of the Triad. It also won't find any of the .rtc or .rtls unless you go to settings and tell it to scan subdirectories and even then it errors out. So the workaround for this would be to figure out a way to force the launcher to force the winrott executable to launch where it's actually located in the file system, instead of from where the launcher is.
