TL:DR - Buy the game, highly recommend, immense replay value, interactive and immersive story line, great soundtrack, good graphics.
Long con version:
This is, perhaps, one of those underrated games which a lot of people might overlook. Really underrated. A lot of my friends do not know this game (I won't lie, they are all AAA junkies, always talking about the big AAA titles like Assassins Creed, Mass Effect etc.). I would really insist them to try it. I bought the original version when it came out. It was then removed for the "Directos cut" edition (its just the normal version with the Missing link DLC) . I have played the retail version at least 3-4 times, and later bought the Directors cut to experience the DLC. And trust me, I am not the kind of person who replays a game (New game plus or from the beginning) unless it had a lot of variety (coming to that in a second), and/or a lot of fun like Borderlands 2 with friends. I mostly play games for the story and can hardly think of few games that really persuade me to play them again.
Now enough of my rants, what about the game? This game has got so much variety, you would probably have a hard time being satisfied with one playthrough. It features dialogue sequences, similar to games like Mass Effect, which occur when you talk to people. Depending on how you approach the situation, you may get different responses from people. The combat system is resonably diverse too, with weapons ranging (long, medium, short) and style (silent, blistering).
If you watched the trailer, you would probably know that Adam Jensen works as a security officer for a company called Sarif Industries, a leading biotech corporation. It manufactures augmentations, robotic enhancements for humans. Then in a mysterious and violent incident, a team of scientists were kidnapped right before presenting a major discovery and the kidnappers almost kill Adam. Being so badly hurt from the incident, Adam was augmented to save his life. Although "He never asked for this", it saved his life and gives him abilities which he didn't have before. After a few months, he returns to re investigate the incident and, in the process, unravel the motive and mystery behind the attack. as he eventually learns, there is a lot more than that meets the eye.
The story is pretty immersive and well planned out. Each stage leaves you at the edge as to what happens next. Seeing from the perspective of several men really is a good experience.
The core aspect of the game revolves around what upgrades you choose (using "Praxis", as it is called in game), and this is probably a choice you would want to think about before you level up. There are a variety of upgrades which give you different abilities, and these abilities can be combined in different ways. Getting these upgrades takes a lot of time, and you cannot reskill at any given point. And I would generally recommend upgrading the skill to its maximum, but it is not mandatory and you can decide how to level up. So before proceeding, decide on how you want to approach the game. You want to be an invisible ghost passing right under enemies noses without even the smallest of sounds? You want to be a ninja assassin, taking out enemies before they can even sense your presence? You want to be a hacker, bypassing locked doors, playing with enemy cameras and turrets? Do you want to go all guns blazing, destroying everything in your path? Or do you use your talking skills to persuade people to tell or do something? I haven't covered all aspects, but as you can already see, there is a lot of options to play with. The game even gives you a choice to kill people using lethal techniques or just knock them unconscious with non lethal ones.
As already mentioned, there are a variety of weapons available in game. You can choose weapons with long range (like snipers), medium range ( like pistols) or short range (like shot guns). If those toys don't appeal you, the game has also got grenades, mines, grenade launchers, rocket launchers etc., but be advised, they are available only after progressing a long way through the game, and their ammo is limited. The game allows you to upgrade certain weapons increasing their capabilities (like damage) and/or additional features (like attaching a silencer). Decide on the weapon you want to use and try to stick with it. The ammo can be a problem, but it is very resonable if you use the bullets wisely. There are also lethal and non lethal weapons, so if you do not like to kill people, you can use the non lethal weapons to knock them unconscious.
As with most games, headshots insta-kill enemies unless they have helmets or armour protecting them (though that can be overcome with upgrades to the weapon). Apart from weapons, you have really cool option to "takedown" enemies that you are sufficiently close to. Trust me, it is really satisfying to do! Again, you have lethal and non lethal takedowns to kill or just simply knock the enemy unconscious. There is also a cover system where you hide behind objects that gives you some protecting against bulltes, and also help in stealth approaches. The boss fights are good too, although some people find it somewhat less rewarding.
There are plenty of side missions and explorations to do. Talking to the right people can trigger these missions and exploring areas are rewarding in different ways. The places are resonably big to explore, so it might take a bit of time. The graphics are really beautiful too, so is the ambient environment. The soundtrack by Michael McCann is really awesome, and has made it to my top favourite game soundtracks. I would highly recoomend buying it if you can (if you liked the soundtracks in game).
The game also gives you an option to change the outcome of certain situations by choosing appropriate options and/or using the right upgrades CASIE mod especially
These are some of the things that I think give the game a really good run for the money and excellent replay value.
I cannot really think of any cons in the game, apart from maybe a few glitches, and I only probably encountered once. If you actually play the game, you will discover some really powerful combinations One of the combinations being Typhoon (this s*** is OP as f***) and EMP grenade/Concussion grenade
that makes even boss fights last only for seconds.
And also Adams flat voice (JK).
I haven't covered every aspect of the game, only the ones I felt were really good and important. You can read about them in walkthroughs or guides for this game if you so desire. It is really worth the money, even if it is not on sale. I would recommend this game without any hesitation.
