This is similar to Puzzle Quest 1, in that you match gems to eventually attack the enemy. It's a tad different in Puzzle Kingdoms though. While you do match gems to increase your 'pool', spells are not the main focus. You have troops instead of spells, and each unit has a certain amount and combination of the runes. The peasant, for example, has 3 yellow runes. When you match 3 Yellow Runes, 1 of the peasants Yellow Runes will be filled up. When all of a units Runes are charged up, you press the attack button, which causes all units that are full charged to attack one by one. The more units charged at once, the larger bonus they'll each get. So 2 units charged up will have +1 damage to each of their attacks, +2 for 3 charged units, etc. You can have 4 Units with you at once. You also have a 'Hero', which will give various passives to you, and will even increase your units attack and defense. There are many heros you can get.
While you can have 4 Units in your 'party', you can have any variation, so you can have 2 Soldiers, 1 Archer, and 1 Peasant. You do not attack the Hero, you attack the Units, which each have Attack, Health, and Defense. When all Units are dead, the enemy/player loses. If a unit dies, then you'll need to buy/recruit a new one with Gold, which is earned by defeating towns/villages/etc.
On the World Map, there are various Kingdoms you need to conquer. To do this, you enter the Kingdom and move from village/town/keep/whatever and conquer the troops there, earning gold and experience along the way. You could head straight to the main castle to defeat the leader, which is the only one(so far) with a hero unit, which you'll beat the Kingdom once you do. There are also Ruins on the map which contain powerful guardians, which once beat will give you a large supply of gold.
I'm still early in the game, but there are spells which so far I believe are unlocked as you level various heroes, and relics to equip them with to boost various things. Just like Troops, you can have 4 Spells and 4 Relics with you in battle. Any gold left over that you earned in a Kingdom will be taken out and put into your Empires Treasury, which is used to unlock further Heros, Troops, Relics, and Spells, so you can vary up what you take into a battle/Kingdom.
I definitely recommend this game, especially to any Puzzle Quest fans.
