This game will take hours off of your life (in the best way possible).
Europa Universalis IV [EU4] is a grand strategy RTS from Paradox Interactive. The game is set on the earth anywhere within 1444-1825, focusing heavily on colonization, imperialism and the influence of the papacy and the Holy Roman Empire on the rest of the known world at the time.
I don't think I've ever fallen so completely in love with a game since I discovered the Metroid series. One of the things that bug me about RTS games is that usually, during the late game, there isn't much to do since your economy is self-sustaining and the most attention-consuming task is managing military units. EU4 goes so much more in depth than any other game I've played before (to be fair, it is my first grand strategy game, so I don't know how it compares to its peers).
I like to always have my mind focused on something and can get bored quite easily at times. While there are slow times like in any other game, EU4 has so many little tasks and situations that need occasional checking up, as well as random events every so often, that your mind is almost always engaged.
The learning curve is quite steep for this game, in my own experience (around 20-30 hours to grasp many of the subtle yet critical elements). I recommend starting as the Aztecs for your first game - no one in Central America can build ships for quite a while, so you will be able to focus on understanding how the basics of land combat work. You will be defeated multiple times your first few playthroughs. Don't give up - this is quite normal. Also, turn player bonuses on in the menu for your first few learning games.
I won't go into detail on the elements of the game since there are SO MANY - this review would probably take about 20-30 min to read if I did and nobody likes that :/
If you need help learning the game, the in-game tutorial didn't do much for me. I hear there are superb video tutorials on YouTube, so check those out if you so desire.
As for DLC, there are currently five official expansions and numerous music/cosmetic enhancements. I have purchased a few of the music/cosmetics and cannot complain, but I have not purchased any of the expansions and so cannot comment on their value.
I have used the Extended Timeline mod extensively and completely recommend that you try it, but play some vanilla games first since it is essentially a complete overhaul.
I have lost much time to this game. Whether or not that is good is for you to decide. I wholeheartedly recommend this masterpiece to anyone who claims to enjoy strategy gaming.
