(Full disclosure: I mainly play with the planes, so that's what this review will cover)
War Thunder strikes a nice balance between "fun" and "realistic." There's Arcade Mode, where planes fly like you'd expect them to in a video game, you get reloads, you get video-game-like objectives (Airfields Domination - go here and cap this point, then you get points and eventually win! Air Domination/Ground Strike - If it moves, shoot it and/or bomb it!), you respawn when you die, and all-in-all it's a pretty good time. Then you've got Realistic Mode, where the flight model is more accurate, you have limited ammo and fuel, you can rip off your wings by pulling hard turns at high speeds, your objectives seem like actual objectives, and when you die, you're done. And lastly, there's Simulator Mode. I haven't played Simulator because I'm a scrub and I don't have a joystick, but from what I've seen, that's exactly what it is. Cockpit view, joystick and pedal control, ultra-realistic flight models, the whole shebang.
Anyway, let's talk about complaints people have, and why I agree with some, and disagree with others.
Russian Bias - Heh, no. Russian planes are really easy to use, so you don't have to be very good to come out on top. However, other planes certainly have advantages over them, you just have to be good to exploit those advantages. For example: Aside from the Yaks, Russian planes will turn like a brick. Turnfight them, and you'll win.
Forums - Simply put, I don't really view the forums as part of the game. Are they the best? No. Can you enjoy the game without ever setting foot in the forums? Yes.
The Grind - Alright, I'll concede this one. Up until around Tier 3-4, the grind is practically non-existent. After that, yeah, you'll start to feel it. A lot.
All-in-all, it's a pretty great game. It's fun, it's addictive, and it's free!
