just before the ships attack the planet also after i have destroyed the defenses
can you re-write that sentece in a more understable manner?

If using *auto* mode the AI will fire on planets if they have defenses. But once their defenses are destroyed it will stop firing so not to destroy a colony completely. This doesn't affect manually controlling your ships.
