Will there be a UI overhaul?
I am watching this game with interest since I love 4x type games but one thing that has struck my after watching videos and looking at the screenshots is the user interface.

I am wondering if there will be a major overhaul of the User Interface or is this how the game is going to be?

Hi nirth, thanks for your interest in Horizon!

The game is a WIP, and feedback is guiding many of the changes. If there are enough players who want specific UI changes, we are likely to review that portion. We are a small team though, so a general overhaul is daunting.

Was there something specific about the UI that irked you in the videos/screenshots?

Thank you for asking. I ran out of time as I was putting together some rough bits and pieces but I've attached a link to some of the thoughts.

The question of "What is this meant to be?" is about the UI Element framing of Races, Techs, and Turn. The asymmetrical look with the font doesn't strike me as 'high tech' or 'futuristic UI' so I'm having a hard time with what the non-button buttons are trying to say. It's a very prominent element and something about it just doesn't... grab me. Maybe if the buttons became buttons and the background was more transparent it'd work better for me.

I don't understand why RACES and TECHS are considered to be so important that they get such huge placement when something like finances gets very little information. I haven't played the game so maybe diplomacy (I'm assuming that's what RACES is meant to indicate) plays a central part to the game.

Where I put "ugly" I mean that there is some sort of embellishment of the UI border but it isn't clean. At the bottom the is some stepping in of the border line BUT the background isn't transparent so it looks bad.

For the end of turn messages - there being a separate screen would get on my nerves. That makes end of turn clicking a two click thing instead of a one click thing and if nothing is happening for a period of time two clicks is, really, twice as much work plus you have to move your mouse! GASP! So much effort ;)

Instead, use the left side of the screen where there is a lot of un-used real estate and put down the end of turn information there in a transparent font. If someone mouses over, highlight the particular blurb and provide the same functionality that the current end of turn screen does. Plus, when nothing happens in regards to category there is no reason to put in that category with a "nothing" below it. Just leave it out. That's unnecessary clutter.

I'm not sure how I feel about putting the solar system information in a vertical display but I suppose I could get used to it. It's more of a 'meh' thing than a 'that's cool' thing to me. If that bar were to provide meaningful information about what the solar system contained then, at least, it would be useful. Ideally, in my mind, there would be a solar system map that would show the planets orbiting the star but it isn't necessary I suppose. Still, I'd like to be able to look over at the bar and see things like what planets could be colonized, the planets that -are- colonized some information about the colony (ownership, size, what kind of colony, currently active, defenses? the highlights), and exploration status.

If I have a planet selected then I'd like to see that planet being highlighted. Something subtle like a brightening of the selected planet is plenty to me.

Solid suggestions, thanks very much for the thorough critique!

There is far too much 'flashy' generic sci-fi dressing around virtually every aspect of the UI and it's completely unnecessary. Play EVE Online and you're 90% toward what you should be. Another example: the incredibly drawn out main menu draw as you open the game. Unnecessary?

Also, having to drill into task forces to assign orders is silly when I should be able to click on a ship, click on a system and the game will figure out that I want to send it there. I understand you guys are trying to build nuance to this otherwise Master of Orion-like, but it complicates the simplest things.

While the game itself seems most promising, the UI design is pretty horrible.
I am not talking about aesthetics, but about functionality. Good UI design is about showing bits that you would use often, and hiding bits that you use rarely (but if you use it at all, it shouldn't be hidden too deep).
Good UI design tries to make you click less, if you don't really have to. Also to decrease the mouse mileage. Things that are logically connected should be placed near eachother, etc.

Other then the Interface the game seems really fab, with a lot of things being done right (I really like how the research works, for example. Although probably would be nice if some branches like Bio-Weapons, or however that tech is called, could be completely stopped).

After playing 30min I can only say I find the comfort options not advanced enough. For example there is no auto move in a system. Or you also need 3 clicks to move a fleet from system to system. Why not simply make move 1 rigt click?

the tech tree in general could use an overhaul. a good braching tech tree with variety brings more diversity to a 4X game
