Terraforming in this game is different from some of the other 4X games (but exactly the same with some of the other 4X games, I am going to assume you are more familiar with the Change Planet Type model).

You don't actually change a planet, what Terraforming allows you to do is colonise planets you normally can't and gives you bonuses on food, growth, and population caps. This may not seem lile much, but none-Terran colonisable planets tend to have large handicaps that Terraforming removes as your refine the tech, and those bonuses are all you got for formerly uncolonisable planets.

It makes crappy planets less crappy, lets you finally colonise the really bad ones, and gives improvements all around to make all your planets better. At the highest tech you can get some of the crappy worlds to be pretty decent. They still stay the same classification as a planet type.

I am thinking the AI start with it, since i have seen them on all types of planets armed to the teeth with advanced weapnry, its obvious the AI are majorly cheating in this game.

Hi Jamie, the AI is not cheating, they are governed by the same rules as the player. What you are seeing is that different races are native to different types of planets. One race (the barbecks/slug like creatures) can live on all planet types (except gas giants). The only other exceptions are terraforming or if you invade and take over a planet without exterminating the local population which is native to that atmosphere.

As for their defences, the AI will build defense fleets to protect their colonies if they have the resources to do so.

How to unlock Terraforming ? Is it in Biotech ?

It's in Biotech, you can discover it via normal discovering new tech means. Getting lucky on a dig, getting an alien race that has it to give it to you, or by lucking out. I believe you get a chance to get a new discovery everytime you successfully research something in the field. So you will need to focus on Biotech and successfully complete exisitng projects till you unlock it.

I would like to see a different, possibly more or less typical, type of terraforming happen. Terra-Forming does literally mean "world shaping", and the process can even be ultra slow. But it would be nice to watch these colonized outposts eventually become Terran paradises.

They could add a tech that once you get certian techs near max you discover this.
