For AI opponents. They each have several trait settings as seen in the select opponents screen. So it would be possible to create custom AI races and they will play based on these settings.
This part also has a lot to do with modding, so we intend to work with players who want to engage into modding to make as easy as possible to add custom races/factions.
For me, personalization, especially player and AI race creation, is important in 4x games as it adds replayability. I could play multiple games before I get tired of a 4x as long as their are varied opponents with varied personalitie and playstyles to keep things somewhat fresh and interesting.
Doom, a game released in 1993, still has a thriving community which releases various mods and addons even today, similarily, Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind is still alive and well because of it's modding community.
I totally agree. I'm in my 3rd decade of playing 4X games and particulary the space/sci-fi genre. You always want to create your own "Earth Alliance/Federation/Tau'ri/Klingon/Vulcan/Cylon/whatever" - within the parameters of the usual archetypes laid down, being able to customize and tweak your race is ESSENTIAL not just for replayability but also enjoyment and the sense that you can 'play the game YOUR way'.
Having played all the GalCivs, all the MoOs, (MoO3 is still my favourite for complexity and travel of space-lanes, with a realistic penalty for travelling off space lines, but not to the point of needing to wait 200 turns and mid-late game tech to get anywhere) I have been anxious to play an updated version of these. Endless Space looked good but just bored me to tears, and this promises much, so I am eager to play!! A humans/terrans race that could be tweaked for advantages such as increased accuracy on ground combat, or in bioharvesting/mining/research is always a good reason to keep playing.
