This game was meant to be played on "Tough"
I read a bunch of reviews, and they complained about the game lacking challenge. Well, I played through on Tough, and while I wasn't exactly straining with all my might to clear areas, I thought the challenge was plenty appropriate (although uneven - the bosses, for example, vary wildly in difficulty): enough to make me sweat at times, but never so much that I couldn't handle it.

Anyway, loved the game, would recommend to any and everyone.

does the combat improve? on normal its pretty much a button smasher. did you see yourself fight more thoughtfully?

Tough is now normal for me, but I took off the stats of the enemies so that made it tougher to pick out the weaker enemies and decide when to end a combo. So try taking off the stats you'll miss them at first but you'll rely on memory.

I guess its not very difficult for those familiar with the genre where they dodge everything and attack carefully. First try was on Tough but that proved a bit too uh, punishing, so i tried again on normal after a bit and beat the game that way. Then to try again on Tough, which at that point was far less punishing (because of better handling of stat points, actually buying/finding proper equipment, also handy to prepare items in advance for areas).

Dont think i'll be even trying the even higher difficulty level though, its a good game but i dont want a freakin' repeat of Super Meat Boy, except that game was built to know how to catch the player when he fails and give a fair and quick restart (while still of course being ever so challenging). :P
I guess beat-em-ups arent entirely my genre to play at the higher difficulty levels, bless them difficulty settings for those reasons.

this game is overall very easy to get a grip of, and in my personal opinion even on Hardcore. I'm no epic game-tastic, but the nature of this game's ABSOLUTE true difficulty (even on hard) is just if you let yourself grow overwhelmed or similarly to puzzles need a technique. Even so... despite the nature of the game, I highly recommend prety much anyone to play and play on hardcore.

Easy. And besides, the hardest part of hardcore is when you P-P-P-PARRY BREAKER in anywhere but everdawn, and never get hurt; or a stalemate until you learn dust's super-combatability. (Yes, even the combos are easy to rack up)

I agree with your statement. First I played this on "Normal", and found it pretty easy. My last play was on "Tough", and I found the difficulty to be just right until the Sorrowing Meadow, and easy again after that (except for the last boss, that was a little harder; just a little, though). The next time I decide to play, I think I'll try "Hardcore" to see how it goes.

Yea, i just find hardcore; better overall, as lesser difficulties can be a bit messy imo. If one plays hardcore, the difference isn't staggering, and i believe the whole system is more efficient and balanced. Still, the dodging and the battling can get spikes of challenge. I find anyway, but it plans to come out pretty easy for me...
