Dust: An Elysian Tail
Ending problems. *SPOILERS*
ENDING SPOILERS, LOOK AWAY.

Well after playing and beating the game in a few sit downs, getting all the items, doing all the side quests and getting 100% on all the maps and finding all the treasures and maxing out Dust's level and stats I finally decided to take on the end of the game and it was pretty satisfying going through three stages to defeat Gaius, didn't even use Fidget's attacks to beat him for the sake of mental honorhood and well...I defeated him and up came the scene of me having to hold the joystick right to get Dust to crawl to the edge where Gaius was hanging by his single hand and slowly but surely I made it to him and it just went straight to the credits the second Dust made contact with Gaius. I felt really confused and I'm pretty sure there's some kind of ending sequence and I've been scratching my head even wondering if there were multiple endings but that's not the case, did my game goof up or am I missing something?

There's definitely an ending cutscene. Try looking it up on Youtube if you can't get it in your game.

Thanks, that's basically what I wanted to know, I got pretty heavily pulled in by the story and thought it would have been really weird that there was nothing else at the end besides credits, like a really ♥♥♥♥♥♥ cliff hanger.
Have you seen any other cutscenes? There are about 4 of them, excluding the chapter introductions which are nothing special. The problem with using Windows Media Player is that the game is dependent on an external application working correctly, and if it doesn't then it looks like a fault in the game.

thats odd. I mean really odd.
I am using win 7 and I disabled media player (and IE, noone should use that) ages ago.
but I do have VLC installed. and I could see all cutscenes perfectly.

I had that problem with A Virus Named Tom which would cause it to crash if the cutscenes never played but the cutscenes like how it shows the chapter number and name I could see those fine but I'm not sure what other cutscenes you're talking about unless you mean the ones that go back and forth between Gaius and that one soldier.
Well, I went into the folder for the game and under Dust An Elysian Tale/Content/Video were all the cutscenes in WIndows videos format, watched them all and wow do certain things make a lot more sense now, even the chapter screens are supposed to have that nice little clip added in but mine never showed up due to WMP not working I guess. There's actually five story cutscenes, three map transition cutscenes, chapter cutscene, splash screen and the background of Everdawn Basin was actually a video file as well. I thought that during certain scenes when it showed two sets of text that it was Dust having internal conflictions because of Cassius and Jin but it was actually the dialog for the cutscenes that should have played before hand.

EDIT: I'm going to see if I can fix my problem and get WMP to play videos in XNA developed games. I'm thinking that Media Player Classic may have left registry keys in that point WMV files to the wrong codecs which is causing them to not play in Dust or any of the other XNA games I have.

If WMP is anything like IE then disabling it will do little more than remove the executable. Most of the DLLs remain because they are used by other software (eg. Office 2003 and earlier) and potentially by Windows.

Check the notes about video issues in the support sticky, it might point you in the right direction.

I agree with this, my computer used to cut the cutscenes in half for some bizzare reason, I wouldn't be surprised if it flat-out wasn't bothering to load the videos in some cases.

Just Youtube it OP, it's better than wasting your time looking for a patch or finding out which Windows update to uninstall.

I actually fixed it and I just watched the videos from the content/video folder, all the videos are in a non-protected WMV format.

For some reason even after clearing all third party codecs from my system and doing registry sweeps to make sure they were gone there was actually an image file codec pack I had that messed with WMV playback, totally unexpected, deleted that and deleted what it left behind and bam, cutscenes worked again, it's like I'm playing a totally different game, I missed so much of the story because of it.

I heard that issue happened rarely with some third party codecs and commonly because of that one Windows Update, I mean for the split in half cutscenes problem.

It's nice though because this also fixed the problem I was having with other XNA titles that would crash from not being able to play cutscenes such as; A Virus Named Tom or just not playing cutscenes altogether like Dust was doing.
Wow, I just finished this great game and I can't believe I didn't see any of the cutscenes :(

I didn't like the abrupt ending so I looked up what other people were saying about it and I happened to pull up a video showing the end of the game and I was surprised when there was an entire scene and wrap up to the story that I didn't see. Then I found this thread.

I guess I should of noticed there was something wrong when I saw subtitles being displayed behind other subtitles, but I thought there was just something wrong with how they were being displayed and they were out of sync. I wasn't reading them so I never realised the subtitles were different than what was spoken.

I ended up watching them from the folder after I finished the game, but it would of been nice to see them in the game considering this was one of the best games I have played in a long time.

Edit: The video files are WMV. I had my codec running ffdshow on all video files. I disabled ffdshow on all WMV files and the game now plays the cutscenes. Also, the default player for WMV files does not need to be WMP, it works fine with MPC.

Yeah, they don't need to be set to WMP as default because the player just needs the default codec to be the Microsoft one since the XNA engine is a Microsoft product it's designed to use the Microsoft Windows WMA Codec that comes pre-installed with Windows. All my files are set to play with VLC and some are for MPC but the videos play fine. There are quite a few games that have codec issues, every XNA game with pre-rendered video file cutscenes has this issue, the Neptunia games also have this issue and quite a few other games I can't think of off the top of my head. I personally had the same problem with the game as you, abrupt ending, the story seemed really janky, etc. until I looked at the files and saw the cutscenes which made me realize I was having the same issue with this game as I was with other XNA games that I hadn't played in a while where I had solved the issue but I apparently had installed a codec pack between playing those games and Dust.
