I am using win 7 and I disabled media player (and IE, noone should use that) ages ago.
but I do have VLC installed. and I could see all cutscenes perfectly.
EDIT: I'm going to see if I can fix my problem and get WMP to play videos in XNA developed games. I'm thinking that Media Player Classic may have left registry keys in that point WMV files to the wrong codecs which is causing them to not play in Dust or any of the other XNA games I have.
Check the notes about video issues in the support sticky, it might point you in the right direction.
Just Youtube it OP, it's better than wasting your time looking for a patch or finding out which Windows update to uninstall.
I actually fixed it and I just watched the videos from the content/video folder, all the videos are in a non-protected WMV format.
For some reason even after clearing all third party codecs from my system and doing registry sweeps to make sure they were gone there was actually an image file codec pack I had that messed with WMV playback, totally unexpected, deleted that and deleted what it left behind and bam, cutscenes worked again, it's like I'm playing a totally different game, I missed so much of the story because of it.
I heard that issue happened rarely with some third party codecs and commonly because of that one Windows Update, I mean for the split in half cutscenes problem.
It's nice though because this also fixed the problem I was having with other XNA titles that would crash from not being able to play cutscenes such as; A Virus Named Tom or just not playing cutscenes altogether like Dust was doing.
I didn't like the abrupt ending so I looked up what other people were saying about it and I happened to pull up a video showing the end of the game and I was surprised when there was an entire scene and wrap up to the story that I didn't see. Then I found this thread.
I guess I should of noticed there was something wrong when I saw subtitles being displayed behind other subtitles, but I thought there was just something wrong with how they were being displayed and they were out of sync. I wasn't reading them so I never realised the subtitles were different than what was spoken.
I ended up watching them from the folder after I finished the game, but it would of been nice to see them in the game considering this was one of the best games I have played in a long time.
Edit: The video files are WMV. I had my codec running ffdshow on all video files. I disabled ffdshow on all WMV files and the game now plays the cutscenes. Also, the default player for WMV files does not need to be WMP, it works fine with MPC.
