Save game?
Just realized there is no Steam cloud, and no local saves in My Documents. So where can I find these?

Everything except achievements and highscores is saved locally, in the registry. (Replays also).
One of the reasons is because Element4l is also playable without a Steam connection

and what about the mac version?
is there really no way to restore any progress after reinstalling the OS (for instance downgrading from a newer, worse version?)

I see your point (about downgrading), but no, I'm sorry. I'll remember this for our next project.

I wonder if it'd be possible to:
1) Export the registry keys
2) Install new/old OS
3) Install Element4l
4) Restore/Add the exported keys

I remember that some other game stored info in the registry and it was possible to back it up this way. Might be worth trying, if you're comfortable mucking about with the registry.

Is this still the case? I have a backup of my old machine in hand, but from what I am hearing that isn't useful because none of the files in my backup will have my save?

Yes, I'm sorry, you can always unlock every level with the cheat-combination and just press"new game" and select the level you were in.

At the main menu: left shift + left alt + left ctrl + u and restart the game.

Hm kay, so no backup of the savegame possible ^^
Didn't know you can have the savegame in the reg. Explains why I don't find savegames of certain titles. Others must do this too.

I change my pc and lost all my save

I played Element4l on two computers, and in one of them I had all the maps and races, but started playing on the other one with nothing.
So, after a Google search I've found the registry adress, and it's:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\I-Illusions\element4l\
So I exported the configuration from it and imported on the other computer.
The result: All my racemode flags and times where there, but none of my campaign savegame.

What do you mean by "campaign savegame"? Because the only things that are saved are the flags, the times, the sparks and the last level you've played. You can easily continue your campaign by selecting new game, and selecting the level your were playing. So the method you've described should work.

My mistake, in fact, I forgot to look into that.
As I finished the game, there was the "Continue" button and had not thought to check, but really it's all there. The saves, the flags and everything else.
