Jetstream Sam vs. Wolf..
hi everyone.
so i really enjoyed playing as Raiden, only managed a few S ranks but enjoyed the main game very much. i have started Jetstream Sam’s DLC and wow. for some reason i am terrible playing as Sam. which is a shame because i really wanted to like playing as him more than i currently am.
i am “okay” playing as him in the open. i’ve learned the moves, learned to dodge (X+A) instead of parrying every attack. i do/did struggle in the VR training right before the Wolf fight, but can beat those guards, and two mechs.
i am not sure if it’s just the new play/fighting style of Sam, but i find it impossible to beat Wolfy. which is also a shame because i like his theme, so hate but love fighting him lol.
tips, and any helpful advice on how to play as Jetsteam Sam, how to beat Wolfy is what i am after i guess. for some reason this seem incredibly hard for me.

*i have watched a few clips online but it leaves me questioning my own gaming ability. it’s alright seeing someone beat him on hard mode getting S rank, but it isn’t as easy as it looks. one video showed the guy taunting Wolfy first then killing him within seconds because of the damage you inflicted :O how do you play as Sam? i’ve started a new game a few times so i could get some more practice in yet still having trouble.

I feel your pain. I had the ROUGHEST time fighting wolfy as Sam. Hours upon hours later, I ended up saying "screw this" and put it on easy. And I STILL had a fairly rough time. I'm not sure if it's Sam's playstyle or what, I just prefer Raiden's skillset I guess.
i was considering doing that. even if it was on easy mode least i would get some playing time in, and hopefully learn how to properly fight as Sam. thanks, i might give it a shot.

Sam is generally harder to control, and it doesn't help that you don't have any of the upgrades or anything that you're probably used to having from the main campaign. If you haven't figured it out yet, though, you can charge your heavy attack by holding the button. Once I figured this out and got used to Sam's gameplay style, the chapter was much easier.
indeed, and thank you for replying.
i was aware of his heavy attack. from looking at his move list he has a few heavy attacks. either hold Y, or X + hold Y, X + X + hold Y, or X + X + X + hold Y. for me i am use to the endless melee-ing (X button) attacks with Raiden. with Sam, i think he only does a combo of four :(
getting use to that, then X + A to get out of the way from an attack is getting some use to. i think once you (me, myself) gets the hang of his fighting style i’ll like it.

The biggest problem is that I think Sam's parrying is a lot less forgiving than Raiden's, and if you aren't parrying, you're dieing.

I had trouble with that fight, too, so I went looking for tips. Saw someone mention that, after a perfect parry, Wolfy gives you enough time to launch a fully-charged slash for insane damage. That made the fight a whole lot easier. If you can land even a few of those, the fight's pretty much over.

Sam's VR missions can go to hell, though ... especially that one, near the end, that's like 5 separate waves of enemies. I stuggled with a lot of his VR missions, but eventually I made it past all the others. With that one, however, I was having trouble getting past the third wave, so I checked out a video online ... saw, not only was I NOT almost finished, I was barely halfway through and said, "Screw this! I'm moving on!" It just wasn't worth the frustration.

I have a bigger love/hate relationship with this game than any other game in memory. Most of the time I love it, but there are times it brings me closer to chucking my controller than any game I've played in more than 10 years.

Jetstream Sam needs far more finnesse than Raiden. His parry window is very brief, and his parry's damage scales based on how much fuel you have, the more the better.

His Quick Draw mechanics are the key to getting good with him, especially if you do them on taunted enemies, which deals significant damage, and incredible amounts on Revengeance mode.

Learn to rely on the invincibility frames of his dodge, which, like Raiden, seem to have the most frames during their forward dodge. This should usually take precedence over parrying, given that taunted opponents will damage you through your guard.

Cancel out of taunt with dodging almost every time, that'll ensure you don't have some enraged enemy beating the hell out of the snarky Samurai.

He also has much better aerial mobility, which should be used to your advantage. Double jumping and air-dashing can be crucial, except against Armstrong.

His ninja run is also much faster than Raiden's, but his attacks during it are pretty mediocre.

He uses much more fuel than Raiden, and might feel clunky at first.

His aerial Quick-Draw can do a lot of damage, and some enemies can't seem to counter it.

When you get used to him, he has far more mobility options than Raiden. Quick-Draw covers quite the distance, even though his basic walk/run speed is slower than Raiden's, even though his sprint is faster.

His Quick-Draw also has invincibility frames when fully charged, making it extremely potent and able to leave Sam unscathed.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With all that said: I hope MGR2 adds more aspects of Sam's style to the main game, as he adds a lot of depth that Raiden lacked with his sword.

tl;dr

Forget everything youve learned from the main game and start using the dodge instead of blocking.

Forget blocking, only go for parries but Sam's parry window is tighter than Raiden's. Taunting, blade draw and dodging are your best friends. When you taunt someone, they take extra damage but they become more aggressive and you can't parry them while they're under the effect and you take damage by trying to block during that time.

Sam's normal attacks are carbage, don't try to use them too much. His parry is really good because it can do small AoE. Taunt and do draw attacks to cut anyone in half without much effort.

Sam is really good once you learn his playstyle. I had trouble going back to Raiden after playing so much with Sam.

Watch this and take tips from it. It's the same guy that inspired me to do ♥♥♥♥♥♥ youpoop videos.

Cleared Jetsream Sam Story on hard just now and I was struggling with the wolf until I learned that you can lock-on in this game. Dodging was actually really cool mechanic after that.
Cleared all Vr missions and i loved the challenge. I actually prefer his moveset over Raidens after the initial confusion.
Best way for me to beat Wolf is to dodge his attacks and counterattack with lights and like it was said before, you can use a charged attack after you parry wolfs spin attack.
Keep in mind Sam in a samurai (get it? SAM-urai?) and raiden is a ninja.

and i still suck at this boss

In that case, shouldn't Sam be the one tanking and parrying every attack while Raiden was the one nimbly dodging out of the way of every attack, not the other around?
