Concerned Potential Buyer
Okay, haven't played the game, yet. I'm very much interested in the potential here. However, my largest concerns are the descriptions of problems still present in the game at release, and perhaps ongoing. One example, optimization issues. I worry that developers who haven't done this by the time it's released to Steam either don't understand the importance of doing it or don't know how. If that's true, I worry then whether they have the ability and will to carry this to completion, including the promised development tools which are very much of interest to me. Having said all that, I haven't seen enough to convince me to buy the game at this point.

P.S. I'm not interested in hearing about how much you hate the game. If you do, fine. But it's irrelevant.

It also bothers me that they are talking about making a second game when the first isn't where it ought to be. Developers who move on rarely devote time, energy, or resources to continue development on earlier projects.

Yeah, the optimization is that bad. A big patch is scheduled, perhaps that fixes things, so wait for that I guess? Give it a week or two, I suppose, see how it's progressed. If these things bother you, then the game will not please you. There is irritating slow down, and really, this game has no business running at any less than 60 FPS, but it is what it is. Small team, massive game, what do...

As for the game, there's a lot of quests, a lot of items, a lot of secret hidden piles of stuff to find, lot to explore, lots of skills, story is kinda neat so far, etc, if that's all the bees knees to you, you could probably manage to find enjoyment while suffering the horrible optimization.

I don't think the controls are as bad as people say, unless you have one arm or something. The game is in desperate need of some QOL changes too, but also, not exactly game breaking.

To be honest, yes, there are issues with optimization. The frame rate is a tad skippy when out in the open world with all settings turned up..and it shouldn't be so.

Before someone comes in telling me my computer is the problem, it isn't. I can run games like skyrim, Saints Row 3 etc on max settings and get no lag.

I often find myself hoping they will improve the aforementioned optimization.

There are some bugs that the game would be better off without as well..and some stability issues..at least for me..as my game tends to freeze every once in awhile..which is crippling because I am not someone who saves the game with any great amount of frequency.

The game is fun and there is indeed plenty of stuff in it that is done well..despite this. I do find myself going back to it and playing it even after losing 10 minutes or so of gameplay, so that is a bit of testament to how fun it is.

The developers do seem to be devoted to fixing the game up, at leat thus far, and have taken into consideration many of the things people in the community suggest. I have hopes that they will continue to improve the game..and I also hope that they do not forego those who have put their faith in them as a development team.

I dearly hope the developers fix the issues i mentioned above, if indeed they are game related issues..which I tend to believe they are as I don't have such problems with other games. If/when they do, I will feel far more confident recommending the game to others.

bought it. wish I haddnt untill its on offer for £2.50. Unfinnished and full of bugs (e.g. looting through walls). 2 hours play. Nice retro feel - good potential but not ready for release and certainly not worth £12 !! Since I have bought it I will just uninstall it, wait half a year and come back with a hope that its been considerably tweaked/fixed. Untill then its going in my bin.

Running Skyrim and Saints Row 3 on highest settings doesnt say much these days, those games are several years old and the hardware have more than doubled in speed since they were released.
The best card back when Skyrim was released was the GTX 480, and today the best card is GTX 780, sure there is GTX Titan aswell but I'm exluding that one since it is a very special card targeting a very small group of players.
And you might even be using an old Quadcore CPU with pretty bad IPC?

That doesnt mean the game should be sluggish on your system though, it might still need optimizations, but your claims is invalid because you compare with old games.

Wait and see. Check in with the game periodically like once a week then once a month.

Chances are the fixes to this game to make it a polished experience will take at least a couple of months if not longer. We'll see if the game continues to be improved or if it is set aside for new shinies.

I watched part of a let's play series on it and this game really needs some polish - what I mean by that is that there are things in the game that are, by design, counter intuitive. You can learn them but the learning process appears to be one of frustration by not being able to apply basic logic as to how to do something. Instead you have to do things that aren't readily apparent to get stuff to work. Once you know them it's fine though.

I'd like to see a UI overhaul but I doubt that will happen.

I'd love to see paragraphs in the dialogues but that probably won't happen either. ;)

They're two years old. They are more graphically demanding. You're assuming my specs are as low as can be.

This game engine uses a streaming setup to avoid loading any zones ever; it's a continuous world whis is amazingly cool if you have the hardware to run it well. I think It really needs an SSD with a good internet connection to run smoothly. I say this because It runs smoothly for me now that I reinstalled to my primary SSD drive rather than my fast spindle drive, but it still crashes the same as always; randomly but often after saves or any sort of alt+tab or interruption such as the steam sale update window popping up in the background.

I hope the devs can improve the code so it streams smoothly on spindle drives and doesn't require an SSD to run totally smooth. They NEED to fix the memory leak or whatever it is causing all these crashes. it's really frustrating to get lockups every 5 mins to 1 hour tops so far in two days. So much potential and great dialogue (the barber made me laugh out loud when I told him I didn't want a cut right then lol. I'm sure it will be all good soon after a patch or three.
archangel Jul 5, 2013 @ 12:56am
Barber made me laugh because he commented on your terrible hairstyle and I remember some people complaining on 1st day of release how all hairstyles during char creation are terrible :D
Everwinter Jul 5, 2013 @ 2:49pm
Now the real trick would be to give the barber some better hair style choices than there are at character creation.

So, I've come back to see if improvements have been made. If so, can anyone endorse purchasing the game for a system without an SSD?

skyrim is dx9 coded by competent developers, saints row 3 really isnt that high on the eye candy chart even with dx 11 (the details in the models and buildings are really pretty rudimentary). this game performs poorly because its coded poorly, the SSD thing alone is reason to stay away. keep in mind when you try to whip out your e-peen that when you talk about games with mass appeal you are talking about games designed to run on the most possible systems from the ground up. its a shame really morrowind was an amazing game and oblifvion was a benchmark game for years.. skyrim is just generic ♥♥♥♥ for the masses to eat up.

Devs have been talking about the upcoming patches including 1.08 for a long time, but as it stands today after 7 tiny patches the game is still junk and unfinished. Feels like a big waste of money. It took me a while to reach this level of frustration with this game and company.

I supported them from early on and waited patiently, but now checking in again for any word on updates to LOD, and then to see them talking about LOD 2 just really ticks me off. They still have not even come close to making this game LOD work and are talking about LOD2 wow, thats pretty slimey and I can say I am pretty annoyed.

Until I see LOD 1 fixed, I will make sure to avoid anything this company puts out and to tell everyone I know to do the same.

I am tired of fly-by-night game companies ripping off consumers.

//Rant off

I have an SSD and even with it the game has issues streaming.
