One thing's for certain, T4 is a visual downgrade and has decidedly worse graphics than T3, thus it loses A LOT of it's charm and atmosphere. And atmosphere is a big thing in the Tropico games.

Besides, Kalypso were being jerks about it on the forum, completely denying the worse textures and LoD, just calling it "artistic difference" and closing all the threads that pointed it out.

tbh, I won't buy any Kalypso game ever.

T4 is actually T3 with some new buldings and edicts... they just sold it as an independent game (at full costs of course...) instead as an addon, which it really is. also ap2000 is right. the grafic is worser than in T3, looking more cartoonish.
i would recomend you playing T3 and afterwards T4 for the campaign.

you should get both

You can get em both for super cheap now cuz they go on sale often. last week had Tropico 4 vanilla edition for $2.99 here on Steam. I already have the 4 goty version, but I'm waiting for the next time the series gets discounted to pick up the older three.

as far as similarities or differences...
Tropico 4 is a great game. Very fun.
Tropico 3 is considered to be an all around better version.
win-win if you ask me... as long as you (and you definitely can) score them both for ~ 10$

I found that T4 has better graphics than T3 if you set everything to high or ultra. Shadows especially. T4 graphics start downgrading badly at lower than high settings.

I still prefer T3 for play. T4 has too many interuptions.

Got them both, and they both play really similar. T4 has a bit more variety than T3, but T3 sure has the more interesting campaign (despite not being a campaign where every island builds upon the one before but rather is a stream of independent islands), mostly because you actually have a new island for every new challenge rather than having a total set of about 5 different island as it is in T4.

Well, still more than T5 offers...

Which one is better... tough call. They're both heaps of fun. T4 has a lot of user generated content, T3 not so much. But as long as you avoid T5 like the plague, you can't go wrong, actually...

actually I should probably add that if you have the hardware to ULTRA Tropico 3...
It is by far the best looking Tropico/the most realisitic looking.

Get the first Tropico. It is much more challenging. After playing it on and off for 12 years, it still kicks my♥♥♥♥♥ By contrast Tropico 3 is a walk in the park, so the replay value is meh.

True, didn't feel challenged at all so far.
