Deciding to buy or not
I want to buy this game but I read that there is no manual save, only auto-saves. This poses a lot of problems: I can't just pick up and leave, and if I die and specced/shopped for/re-equipped my character, I have to re-do all of that. My questions:

Has this been fixed in a patch?
If it hasn't, do they plan to fix it?

This is pretty much the only thing holding me back from buying this game. Thanks!

the game save quite frequently. you can restart at the beginning of a scenario, yet after when you've already made all your purchasing and upgrade decisions.

i actually appreciated the need to make strategic decisions over a whole scenario, rather than having the temptation to reload until each of my shots connected while every enemy action failed.

Wait for a sale or a better mod to come out. This game is playable but NOT enjoyable at the moment. It's kinda like putting you in the original, with better graphics, but removing 80-90% of the freedom and choices. They are working on modifications/expansions that address this, but they aren't out yet. So if you wait till those are released theres a chance the game will go on sale before then.

Pretty much this. The save issue isn't nearly the big deal people make it out to be. Could it be better? Absolutely. But its completely workable in its present state.

Also you don't get just a single autosave. You can 'rewind' at any time to any previous savepoint. Which lets you undo any decision you truly regret, no matter how long ago.

yes, i meant to mention this.

i used the rewind function once because i took one less runner than i should have (i am, regretfully, a cash hoarder) and the run was impossible. i went back two or three auto-saves and the next attempt was totally successful.

dude, people used to beat megaman without saving, the saving issue its not a problem if you play on at least 30 minutes sessions.
maybe you are gonna get frustrated if you die and have to replay all the fight, but come on, thats part of the fun.
the game is great, and the save system is being adressed (dont believe the first guy) but the game is playable right now and its a lot of fun, buy it

The developers have split a branch off their codebase and are looking at how they can improve the save functionality. They stated it in their latest update, though they're not making promises, they are looking in to what they can achieve without breaking all the things. ^_^

Wow. This is excellent feedback I've received, thank you all for your input! I have a lot to consider here.

Hi OminousShadow87, I just wanted to give you my opinion on this game. I have only played through the campaign once as it inspired me to make my own UGC "Fraggin' Marvellous!", but I have to say, I hardly even noticed the lack of manual saving in my playthrough.

The worst you get is having to skip through a couple of dialogue's or kill a couple of bad guys you've already downed to quickly to get back to where you left off as saves are generally between 10 and 20 minutes apart. Occasionally in some of the big fights you will lose a bit more time from dieing or quitting, but this adds an element of anxiety which gives a level of tension, excitement and forced strategy, which would be missing if you could save anywhere.

That said, the campaign is really not the extent of this game's worth. There is so much interesting and fun stuff coming out of the community and this will continue to grow as more people get to grips with the editor.

If you don't enjoy text dialogue and expect pure action, however, you may get frustrated with the amount of reading (though there is action a-plenty, there is also a lot of reading as it is similar to the p&p in the sense that the character growth and interaction is text based rather than visually represented or voice acted, apart from combat obviously)

If you get it, I hope you enjoy it (I think even if there are elements you don't like, there will probably be others you love)

EDIT - I completely disagree with Jester saying it's not enjoyable yet, and if open world is what you want (it's not what this game is designed to be, if you think about it a p&p campaign is only as open world as the GM can make it within the framework of their adventure and this is what this game is emulating , not the console games) there is UGC in the works and released as early versions that is more open world. I plan to make a more open campaign, but even in "Fraggin' Marvellous!", my first attempt at UGC there is plenty of choice about how to go about things, as there is in the main campaign.

Hope any or all of that helps/makes sense.

All the best!

As has been stated often enough, the autosaving isn't that big of a deal since the game saves frequently and gives you acces to each and every autosave throughout each of your campaigns.

Also, I just wanted to say that I was also on the fence about buying this game, especially since I never played the original tabletop game, but I can honestly say that this game is definitely worth buying, even at the current price.

What you have to consider is that you are not exactly just buying a game.
Actually one is buying a gameplay system (that happens to come with it's own campaign) and also into it's community of eager and loyal fans.

I'm excited for the iOS version. It eliminates the save game frustration for me, because you can simply switch out of the game and the state is suspended.

That's all I really want out of the PC version! The ability to walk away ANYTIME. Real life gets in the way, and you never really know where that next autosave point will be.

I used to beat Super Mario Bros 3 in one sitting as a kid. As a working adult, I'm lucky if I have enough time to play a quick iOS game while I'm pooping.
