I need more games like this!
I finished this game, then I am looking around for days, trying to get into some of the old games, any game with turn based combat and a good story. The problem is I really like a game with good graphics. Shadowrun Returns has ruined me because there really are no games out there like it right now with good graphics :(

I don't count xcom, its just not the same :(

I feel the industry has turned into a sterile--everything has to be a shooter type game. Games lack personality, depth, and replayability. I agree with you TC 100 percent. Have you tried the fallout games on gog. I know graphics are dated, but the games are awesome.

indeed :)

Let's make a Kickstart game, buddies :p

You might consider Arcanum. I know the graphics are dated, but it's a lot like Shadowrun in tone. Magic conflicting with technology. Really long though. Barring that, there has been some good UGC out. I have been enjoying The Deep One.

I absolutely loved Arcanum (wow that game came out of nowhere for me, during a real derth of anything playable after Baldur's Gate) Not sure if it is playable on a Modern machine even with the appropriate emulation. I might have to reinstall one day and find out.

You might like Jagged Alliance 2. It's not fantasy, but it's a turn based tactical strategy with a decent story and characters you will remember for years. Definitely get it with this mod (tons of bug fixes and improvements) http://ja2v113.pbworks.com/w/page/4218339/FrontPage

I'd recommend Planescape Torment, Baldur's Gate I and II, Icewind Dale I and II although the graphics are a bit dated ( you mentioned you like nice graphics). They're not available on Steam (except Baldur's Gate I enhanced edition) but you can get them on gog and ready to play on current computers. Another game that might be of interest to you is Expeditions: Conquistador that came out a couple of months ago, however I cannot vouch for it since I have not played it.
Hope this helps.

I put tons of hours into JA:Back in Action, may try JA2 sometime but need a break from that world (I played it a bit when it came out but cant remember how much). I also played Exp: Conquistador and it is a great game. Thanks all. Its just frustrating seeing at least a hand full of kickstarter games that are funded and I know they will rock but they wont be out for a while. I guess at least I know there is more to come, just gotta be patient.

I'm also looking forward to playing some mods for this game in a few months when someone has something special fleshed out by then I hope.

Expeditions: Conquistadors is a fun game, but it is strongest on storytelling and not graphics. It has a fun to use but simple tactical combat system. It has fairly simplistic levelling/progression mechanics, but they work well for how the game works. If you don't mind reading a lot of text and enjoy turn-based team management style games it is definitely worth checking out. You can get it at gog as well as here on Steam, and it runs well even on minimalistic systems.

Since they have yet to be mentioned here in this thread I will also say you should check out Fallout 1, 2, and Tactics. All of them take place in the same setting (Tactics is not considered canon in the universe though), and the first two have very strong storytelling, Tactics has good squad based tactical combat, and they all have great flavor.

I'd like to see a return of the turn based, Dungeons and Dragons goldbox games (with modern graphics to boot). I like to know what is going on in combat. Not so easy to follow when everything is happening at once.

Secret of the Silver Blades and its like were almost purely hacknslash. You can also get that kind of experience to some extent with Roguelikes though admittedly not within a squad. I second Fallout: tactics as a great squad based tactical game with some RPG elements, lots of humor and pop culture references, and a fairly strong (if a bit linear) storyline.

When you a play an older game with graphics that might be considered lower quality, after a few hours you sort of get used to them and can get into the storyline and game easier. The human brain is pretty cool that way. Try the BG series, and the other old DnD games. Try planescape.

I agree with all of this. Especially the part where your brain forgets what the graphics should look like. Honestly, don't even look at screen shots gameplay or anything, just start playing the game. As said here, if the game is good, then after awhile you will not remember what other graphics look like, so it won't matter. Great graphics sell games in the same way that great advertisements sell sugary breakfast cereals to children, and there is about as much correlation between graphics and quality gaming as there is between advertisement budget and quality food.

So yeah, planescape, fallout 1/2, Jagged Alliance 1/2 (though those don't have any of the exploring really). Alternately, you can wait for all of these other kickstater games to start coming out: Project Eternity, Torment, Wasteland 2, etc. There will also be a shadowrun online game soon-ish, that I assume will be similar, and then another big update to this game at some point, not to mention all of the user generated content that is starting to come out. Anyways, if you must have great graphics and a similar game waiting is probably all that you can do.

Hope there isn't, Shadowrun Returns doesn't hold a candle to the classics. There is so much lag in this game that it isn't funny. It's needless and seriously detracts from the gameplay experience.

That sounds like an issue with your system . "lag" experienced with a game like SRR usually means you are resource shy. There should be no bandwidth issues at all since while it requires steam to be connected there is almost no interaction with the internet beyond the usual.

Possible culprits: DirectX (often a problem with older machines and games), poor Ram set up, multiple background programs and or downloads, Poor Virtual Ram set up, Bad graphics card, bad graphics drivers, bugs in the program*, bad UI in error reporting**.

I put the two last ones in there just in case you thought it was lagging but it was really crashing. If it was actually lagging then ignore them and concentrate on what might be wrong with your system.

* I have noticed and reported this: When a crash occurs in game it doesn't gracefully exit to windows. It just hangs. Which leads to this:

** Sometimes when it crashes via hanging the program actually knows it hung and posts an alert style message but doesn't actually exit the game to show this and so it just hangs until you either alt-tab out (good luck with that) or alt-enter and kill it.
