Well the world in Shadowrun isn't a ruin, though; it's more like Blade Runner - run-down slums in otherwise high-tech cities dominated by megacorporations. Only city to actually get ruined was Chicago sometime in the mid-late 2050s when the bug spirits there got strong enough to make Ares nuke the place.

I see idk if you watch both movies but for some reason it has a shadowrun feel to it i was just wondering if they got some idea off it because in LA the year is 2050 when i seen that i was like wow shadowrun and im going off the saga gen story not returns idk if you play that one but that was the best shadowrun to me.

Have you read Snow Crash (cyberpunk with some Sumerian mysticism injected) and the seminial literary novel Neuromancer which is obviously Shadowrun's source material? 1. look up the vocabulary of Neuromancer and compare to Shadowrun; it's verbatim almost as they are the same universe. 2. look up the atmosphere, sociopolical economics of Neuromancer and compare again.

Escape from New York/L.A. also borrow from William Gibson's work* (and to a lesser extent Neal Stephenson's) as do all cyberpunk themes and tropes.*

Anyway, an Escape From New York/L.A.-type Shadowrun Returns story would be pretty freaking cool. Escape from New York was great when it came out and still makes for a good cyberpunk movie. I would recommend making it and entering it in the Shadowrun Returns Editor Community Contest.

*correction and addendum in my next post.

Well clearly Trolls were swiped from Ernest Borgnine.

But if we're comparing Shadowrun to Kurt Russell movies, I humbly suggest 'Big Trouble in Little China' to be a closer fit. :P

I don't know who Ernest Borgnine is or his connection to trolls but I think you're right with "Big Trouble in Little China", in regards to the fantasy aspects of Shadowrun anyway.

I have to correct myself as I made an overly sweeping statement regarding cyberpunk. While Neuromancer is seminal literary work that inspired most of cyberpunk genre; I was wrong when I stated that Neuromancer influenced "Escape from New York".

In fact OP is correct in his inference that "Escape from New York" is an indirect source material for Shadowrun. William Gibson credits parts of "Escape from New York" as having influenced his work on Neuromancer which in turn largely influenced Shadowrun (and cyberpunk in general (excluding "Bladerunner" as both are parallel to each other in terms of very similar seminal influence to the cyberpunk genre but in different media mediums, former in print and the latter in film)).

Obviously there's even more influencing factors here (e.g. fantasy aspects) but this post is mainly concerning my inaccurate claim regarding OP's initial topic.

So bottom line in terms of "lineage" by influence it goes as follows: "Escape from New York" (somewhat) --> Neuromancer --> Shadowrun
