I request new information on controller support.
Hi,

the title tells pretty much what i want.
I tried to contact Shamshir on Steam but he seems to block or ignore my requests.

So please anyone of this project give some new information on the status of this topic, i bought this game because it's supported for all steam supported platforms (including Linux which i am using) and i hoped that it had controller support.

I tried to help by pushing the other Controller support thread so far and many people posted there who bought that game or would buy if it had support for controllers.

Please tell at least when you plan to release controller support. (Hopefully this week.)

Maybe he blocked/ignored you because people are annoying?

Anyway, I don't know a ton about programming but I doubt it's that simple a matter to simply push such an update as quickly as you are hoping. Sounds unrealistic frankly. I would think something like that would need to go through a testing phase. I suppose in theory they could do it in a beta build.

I think controller support would be a nice feature addition, although personally speaking, I likely would never use it unless I were playing on a TV. Will always be able to aim faster and more precisely with a mouse. I can see why some people would like gamepad support though.

Hopefully they tell this week when they plan to release the controller support and no it's not that hard to implement controller support especially if it's only for xbox 360 but also other controllers should be no problem to them.

I don't see why they wouldn't release controller support in next weeks btw. because the other thread is around since Jul iirc and it has a lot of support and adding controller support doesn't need a testing phase it's just adding a new interface (joypad instead of keyboard) and configuring buttons to it.
You already can re-configure functions to other keys, so it's not that much work actually.

This is not black magic, even it looks like it to you. :)

Sorry, but that seems to be quite unfair to the developers. While it's not black magic, it's programming. In C++. Not an easy task.

As far as I know, there are two ways they can implement controller support - either through the Microsoft XInput API, or through SDL. The XInput way means exposing Microsoft interface, which has the wonderful potential of breaking cross platform support and limiting the game to Windows, not to mention it could mess with SDL itself and thus break the entire game. Detecting the controller input with SDL seems to be easier, but it seems it's not ideal either as it handles less precise information than XInput.

Once that is done, you need to assign some sensible default control layout and expand the options menu for it, with some sensitivity settings along with button configuration. And in case it still ends up too imprecise for the frantic combat of Teleglitch (remember that accuracy is key in this game), the devs will have to add some sort of autoaim for the joypad users but keep the ability to aim manually when you want to shoot a secret wall or lob a nailbomb into a zombie crowd.

And as if that wasn't enough, any of the things I just can introduce lots and lots of bugs. Many of these will take just a minute or two to fix, but there are always the ones where the game crashes inexplicably without any reason and despite everything looking absolutely fine, or where the game freezes once in a blue moon without providing any useful info as to what he hell did just happen. These bugs can take days to fix each, and still have to be removed before the update ships.

Sorry for the outburst, I know lots of people would love to play the game with a controller, but let's not pressure the devs like that. Making games isn't an easy job even when you follow only your own ideas, having a community demanding new features constantly doesn't help.

The devs do listen to the community too. Just look at the 8.6 patch, almost every single change there was requested by the community. Maybe if you will be lucky, the devs will confirm adding the controller..

I don't ask to have controller support the next day but just have information on the decision as i would really like to start playing this game with my xbox 360 controller.

If they tell me that they want to release it soon (in a month or two) I'd be glad and stop asking about it and if they tell that it will take much longer (e.g. 6 months) I'd come back then and start playing the game.

So far you guys answered and that's really great but nobody of the dev team, pretty disappointing. It's not like they are always offline or this is some critical topic.

My point is that the other thread is really old and all i want is some fresh information on that topic. I know that's not as easy to implement as talking about it but I'm not pressuring to implement it here. I think i repeated myself often enough in that post so everyone should understand.

I'm looking forward to see reactions of the developers.

Yep it would be nice to have an ETA about the controller support, the game is really awesome, probably on of the best released this years, but it must be played with a gamepad, doing it with mouse + keyboard is just painful

We haven't discussed it yet, so I can't give you any meaningful date. Everybody is on a break.
Controller support is harder to do than it seems, as Commander Keen described.
We don't see any point in doing a half-♥♥♥♥♥ attempt and doing it correctly takes a bit time.
I'm also totally aware of how popular this feature is.

Thanks for the answer.

If you need help on testing for the linux build just message me on Steam, i'll be glad to help so we all can enjoy having this as soon as possible.
I totally agree with your point of having it as best as possible on release.

I use joy2key for windows. only use the stick for movement, i still aim and fire with mouse because it's easier. aiming with the stick just doesn't work that well. there are other programs that will do the same for linux, googleize it
thebigj_a Aug 12, 2013 @ 9:24pm
Joy2key works. As does xpadder. Why wait, or bother the devs, when you can just as easily do it yourself?

+1 for gamepad support. I'm using a Logitech F710 under Linux and that pretty much equates to an XBox 360 pad. I think this game would be amazing as a twin stick shooter. I'm looking forward to giving it a shot.

still no news about it?

it's implemented!, like really!
