Friend benefits
Is there really a benefit in-game to having any mates with you on your cross-country trip? Because they mostly seem to be a drain on food and medkits. Hell, next playthrough I'm gonna kill them all before I even leave town.

Not really, unless you want a high score.

They help with the final gas scavenge. I usually need ONE for the sake of car cover.

I never spend medkits on them, and I tend to have so much food that I just rest to heal them. Otherwise, I have a lot of fun reading about all the weird stuff they do or get into.

I believe they get hurt instead of you in random events (broken legs etc.). So the more of them you have, the more spread out such injuries will be. You don't need them as such. It just depends on playstyle.

Yeah - things that are really traumatic generally happen to them instead of you (like zombie bites), as long as there is a "them" around.

I'm with Elciled - I rarely am in a dire food situation, so Resting is always enough. And they are handy in that last area, especially in the higher difficulties.
