Backstory?
I was wondering if there's any sort of backstory for the world and/or characters through the course of the game. I've read that there are some bits of story in the messages you decypher, but are they just vague snippets or is it enough to get the jist of what is happening/happened?
Also, do the characters have any dialogue or anything? This wouldn't have even occured to me if the captain/commander guy in the tutorial hadn't had so much dialogue.

I realize this is probably not the kind of game that has a major focus on story and I'm perfectly okay with that. These were just some questions that occured to me while playing the demo. I'll probably still get the game since it seems fun and it's on sale. I was just curious and it would be something extra nice to look forward to.

Thanks. :D:

One of the Dev's stated goals was to avoid hitting players over the head with story if they didn't want it.

Thus, the vast majority of the story is contained in the messages you can decrypt. (If you get really into it, you can actually translate the messages by building your own dictionary- the various characters correspond to specific english letters.)

Some bits of the story are contained in the Sotsdex Monster section (the monster descriptions you unlock once killing a single type of a given monster) while others in the various item descriptions.

Messages you decrypt (and the Sotsdex in general) persists for all your playthroughs.

Wow, even in the monster and item descriptions. That's awesome. Thank you!

Be ready for kill, move, kill, kill, loot, loot, move... Skill check, move, Skill check, loot, kill, kill... Find exit to next level. Finish killing on current level, get gear you left on ground at start of current level, drop off by ent to next level.

If this doesn't sound like your thing, than I'd look else where. *Legends of Dungeons is a much better game in the price range.

This game isn't bad, just realize it's pure dungeon crawl, nothing else. I'd say for 2.50, try it if it sounds like a game you'd want to play.

*At the base price of 9.99.

Best place to know more about what's called the "sotsverse" is from the Kerberos forums (http://www.kerberos-productions.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=41) and the Sword of the Stars wikis.

I for one don't mind a little backstory for context but, BIG TIME, don't want it getting in the way of my gameplay. I see a replayable game like this a bit like a board game or maybe a game of solitaire. Do you really want a heavy handed narative each time you play a game of Monopoly (How exactly did Mr. Money Bags come to own all of Atlantic City?)?

Yeah, there's been a tiny nagging in the back of my head that I might get sick of this game after a while, but I figure at 2.50 it's worth a shot at least. Especially since I really liked the demo.
Legend of Dungeon looks fun as well. Though it does look like a game I'll have to play with friends if I hope to stand a chance of getting anywhere.
Thank you for the advice!

I definitely see where you're coming from and I have to agree. I hadn't thought of it like that when I made this thread. I've only recently gotten into these roguelike, replayable games, so the thought of seeing a lot of story everywhere every time you play hadn't occured to me (and now that it has, it sounds extremely wearying). Thank you for that perspective!

Oh, forgot to mention. I'm not even sure Legend of dungeon has a story, other than getting to the treasure, and then getting out, but, it's tons of fun. Oh, and who doesn't love the idea of wearing a cat as a hat.

Nothing's wrong "IMO" with a game being story lite, I prefer it that way (to an extent). I get sick of feeling indepted at the start of every game I play (Damned dragons).

I must admit, I quickly felt like I didn't have much reason to keep going in this game. 4 or 5 hours of play time, and I'm not sure I'd be willing to start over, random levels or not. I just don't feel like the game has anything new to offer once you've seen a few levels.

That isn't always a bad thing, but, for me, the depth isn't there. I still say it's worth trying for 2.50, but not 9.99.

* Lord Gek has a good point about thinking of these types of games as a single player board game.

I think the game could use save points, apply a massive score penalty penalty for not choosing the default ironman mode and having the option to save.
Chargeit 4 października 2013 o 9:47
Dustbiter, you can save some exp / items every 5 or 10 levels. You do lose the items you're saving until the next play through. You can only access items/exp saved this way once though.

I know about the weird grinding storage system in mindgames. It's not the same as a normal savegame system. Currently I haven't installed mindgames yet, as I'm trying to play the game minus expansion.
