Sword of the Stars: The Pit
Engineer a higher difficulty class?
I've been playing SOTS for a while now, I love this game. I've logged about 90 hours so far and I don't foresee myself quitting anytime soon.

I've beaten easy with all three classes, and I've beaten normal with scout and marine - both of these normal attempts I won on their first try (after winning on easy... I had multiple previous attempts that resulted in utter failure of course).

I recently tried a few runs on normal with the engineer class, and I just get DESTROYED. I honestly have not even been able to make it past the 10th floor after several attempts. Perhaps I just don't get the play style. Is Engineer intended to be a more difficult class, or do you just need to employ different strategies?

I should add that these haven't been particularly unlucky runs, either. On one of my more recent runs I found a rifle, mag rifle, and auto rifle - with decent amounts of ammo for each. Also have had plenty of food. I always just get destroyed in combat. It seems I can't level up the engineer's combat abilities fast enough.
You need to find decent armor and/or make the chitin armor somewhat early (I'd say by about floor 10 on normal and floor 6ish on hard). Targetting helm is pretty awesome for compensating for the engineer's lack of combat skills early if you can make it that fast. With the engineer its really all about making frequent use of the motion detector and playing super safe until you have good armor and a good weapon. They are too weak early though imo, they need to start with at least a targeting pistol instead of the crappy 6 shooter. Anyway GL!
I beat the game on easy with Marine and have been tearing my hair out over a normal Enginer run. After getting "lucky", I've made it to level 11.
Engineer is the most luck dependent class. The only engi run I beat the game with, I found the autopistol before lvl 8 and that essentially carried me until I found better weapons and could craft targeting helm. I was also able to craft chitin plating early. If RNG is not with you early game, you will die. Mid-late game engineer is pretty powerful though (strongest of the three imo). You will eventually start drowning in loot, and the +2 to attributes per level let's you potentially be able to max strength before lvl 30 (as long as you can make enough steroidal enhancers).
This game isn't balanced around the higher difficulties, sadly.
Roguelikes generally benefit from a "one size fits all"-approach to difficulty.

Struggling on hard with an Engineer, but will probably bore myself to death on normal.
I wish I had known there were difficulty setting beforehand, so I wouldn't have bought it.
While I tend to agree I think they were trying to make the game a bit more approachable. Ideally your "one size fits all" should be normal and so far I think it is. I just wish they would release a custom character option so we could make our own builds.
@Ardee That would be interesting. A small story tie in, would be that one of the original three(maybe no the marine, too low on brains) would get lock in a room with a blank "human" clone with a psycho death-bot enroute to finish them off. Which happens, but not before programming the blank with the mission that they were unable to complete... This could actually be used as a tie in for an expansion because of a certain message I found that hinted at More than one Pitt.
Yeahhhh baby --- expannnnsionnnnnnn. I'd buy it.
i hinkwith the marine you are meant to get kitted out VERY quickly because of his high mechanic, lockpicking and foraging and if you don't then you are screwed.
I just beat Engineer on Normal. I beat it by finding a Vorpal Blade, Auto-Rifle and Meson Rifle very early on. With the Meson RifleI could ultra-zap any elite mob and walk throguh any tough encounter. My hardest job was managing my inventory and almost starving once. By the end, I had made a Heavy Slug-Thrower, Laser Rifle and a bunch of other stuff, but they can't hold a candle to the Meson Rifle.

Ugh, yeah. I watched a few videos of people playing this and just assumed since it has all these dynamic stats that you'd be able to build a class like in Dungeons of Dredmor.
Still haven't got to the end on normal and recently just got Mind Games, but I've found the marine the toughest class to play.

Can never get that far with him, worst ever was dying in floor 2 recently.
