Cache verification always fails

I can never even get through the first mission without BSOD or crash to desktop. I have tried underclocking graphics card, re-installing drivers, everything I have seen suggested so far in these forums and other forums.

On top of that, every single time I do a cache verificatino in Steam it says 50 files fail and redownloads 2.3gigs.

What could possibly be going on here?

I found on Ubisoft Forums that the updated version of the game is 1.02 but mine always reports 1.00 on the main menu screen. I see people complaining about this at Ubisoft Forum but no solution from Ubisoft except the suggestion to complain to Steam support, or suggesting it is updated but not showing it.

For some reason I really want to play this game over any other and I just can't due to all these crashes.
