Maze in the Garden?

I came across this maze/labyrinth printed on the floor next to a b burning sphere. I feel like it's a puzzle, but there are no discussions about it online and it does not feature in any guides. Obviously I walked the path to the centre and out again but nothing happened. The maze has no function in the game, it's just decoration for that area. The area has a function which, by now, you've probably figured out.

saw that too: first time without the globe, then finished area and game, went back to find hidden areas like the garden puzzle, then fond this WITH the globe.

As you complete various well-hidden optional goals in the game (Vision puzzles, locked doors, rune collections), more of those spheres will appear. What might happen when there's a sphere at every corner of the octagon...?
