In short, this is not a good
game. It has many, many problems including an extremely convoluted battle system, a character customization and class system which is hard to manage, a world that doesn't really hold together, obviously half-implemented features, recycled monster types, and a plot that's absurd even for a JRPG. It's hard to play properly, easy to screw yourself over with bad decisions early on, and has a protagonist who's only somewhat more tolerable than Tidus.
That said: I put nearly 200 hours into this game because it's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ addictive to some types of players. It's clear that many of the people who worked on Final Fantasy 12 were instrumental to this game, because the art direction is extremely similar (mostly in a good way although the costumes are even more absurd), it has the same sort of "grindy" feel to it, and other similarities both obvious and subtle. There are hundreds and hundreds of different components for item creation and customizaton, a large cast of characters (many of whom have their own optional sub-plots), a guild system with huge amounts of optional tasks, and possibly most importantly, a feeling like you're commanding a small army instead of a fantasy party, since you have can up to 18 characters active at once in up to five "unions" or tactical squads.
The PC version has integrated all of the XBox DLC, which includes a bunch of optional superbosses that are pretty much pallette-swaps of existing ones, has more flexible union creation rules (so you can have squads consisting entirely of special characters instead of having to pad them with generic soldier-types), and possibly most important for the obsessive grinding addicts: a fast-forward mode for finishing battles more quickly. I cannot imagine playing the XBox version without that fast forward.
If you enjoy farming monsters for that one last rare drop because you just have to get that sword for your tank that's a little bit better than his current one, this is the game for you. If you like your RPGs to have engaging plots, skip it.
