Does it still hold up?

I've never played a quake game and remember these being released back int he day but never had a PC that could run them. I just bought the whole series and was wondering is quake II still worth playing? I grew up with in the era of Doom, Wolfenstein, Dark Forces, etc. if that helps. It looks like a fung ame and I played an hour and quite enjoyed my self even with the old graphics and lack of music.

Install the above mod together with high rez textures and models mods last page of that thread , and it kicks mega ass even today.

Gives you the music the above which is awesome.

Seems funny to think that these games were quite demanding at the time they were released. I was fortunate enough to have a PC that could run Quake II back in the day (Pentium 233MHz, 32Mb RAM and some kind of Voodoo graphics card), and I gotta say, I still love playing it now and again, although it's a bit annoying that the Steam version has no music. Still got my CD around somewhere, though.

...Seriously? you didnt have a computer that could run it? what were you useing a 486? :S Quake 2 ran on a p100, 16 meg of ram with a 16meg graph card.....all beit on low graphics but still ran well....you didn't try hard enough :/. System shock 1, now THAT was a horror to get working back in the day.
