I really loved Company of Heroes and I really cheered up when CoH2 came out, and somehow CoH2 is a good game, but neither the game i expected it would be, nor the one I wanted it to be.
It is hard to describe my feelings about CoH2, because i can't simply point on something and say "you screwed up your game there, Relic", but even if CoH2 is far from being horrible, it is as far from being a worthy sequel, at least to me.
But i guess I'll have to analyze why I don't like this game, to make a good review here.
Let's start with the pretty obvious things: DLCs and Addons.
I don't mind about Addons at all. They really provided some awesome contend, but if you want to own all this contend as soon as possible you have to pay about 100€ - and I guess more Addons are coming for CoH2.
However, addons expand the game in depth, strategy and contend, so I wouldn't judge a game for having addons, but there is more: DLC-Commanders. I really hate these guys. I don't care if free2play games sell custom, balanced weapons, items or whatever, but CoH2 is neither free2play, nor are these commanders balanced. Well, guess i have to come back to balance a bit later again. I once played against some dude who just annihilated me with his oneshot-arty kv-1 commander. He surely mastered this commander and was well skilled, but so was I. I guess i could've trained, learned the weakness of this tactic and deafeat him one day, but then he simply buys another commander and this ♥♥♥♥ goes on again. This makes CoH2 to a game where your wallet limits your strength ingame, and that's wrong to me.
The second issue i quit this game has been the balancing. Games are never perfect and developers who try to improve the balance are to be honored, but these game-changing rebalances every few days just took me every fun. It was really hard to find my stile in this game, as it was to find a game sometimes, because relic just changed everything from patch to patch. In the first few days, when this game has still been in the beta, there has been a tactic, where russian players would just spam pickup-trucks early and mount them with flamethrower-infantery and snipers, which kept the troops mobile and safe, while the armored truck took all the damage and can be repaired then easily. It was really hard to find a game as german player this time and I am glad this car is gone now, bt after it had been removed everyone played the Germans, because their infantry and tanks are stronger and the game is easier if you are unskilled. This made relic first rebalance russian troops to make some of them stronger then german soldiers and then they also nerfed the german tanks, which made the expansive panzers easy prey to the cheap russian T-34s. TL:DR, i don't know how thing are now, One side was totally OP, while another one was too weak, which resulted in long times in the queue if playing the op-side, while having a hard time as the other side.
I also didn't like the new game-mechanics. It is not about the snowstorms or the limited view, but the game did feel different to its prequel. It was harder to control units, tank movement still sucked in some points, my infantrymen just vanished when under artillery-fire. I don't really now why it felt so strange to me, but i just didn't get used to the new mechanics, even after playing over 100h. And I am not talking about that my panther, that attacked a SU from the rear once glitched just throgh this darn tank and stood right in front of it, I am talking about the response the player gets to his orders, which is just worse then in CoH1.
The last thing I want to complain about is, that I really don't like the look of this game. CoH1 looked good, it has been dark dirty and realistic, which is good for a WW2 game. CoH2 has way more visual effects, looks happier and the tanks look like plastic toys shooting red glowing bubbles. CoH2 graphics might have been updated, and would've been great in a DoW-game, but not in a WW2-Game. I am one of these guys who plays a game because it is a good game and not for these awesome sun flares flashing your whole sight while melting your graphic-card, even if you just see like one pixel of the sun.
THQ never has been good in promoting their games, even if they made really good games - they wouldn't be bankrupt, if the were (and didn't produce around 1,2 million devices for consoles nobody wanted), which is the reason why CoH2 is still a insiders' tip compared to RTS-giants like Starcraft. It lacked some of the basic features like leaderboards, ranks, a open lobby for custom games (like CoH1) and some more, even if they updated most of this things now.
Company of Heroes is still a good title, but if the community of coh1 didn't die out since it became steam-exclusive, I wouldn't recommend anyone CoH2
