does anyone know if there is a storyline or plot behind these puzzles, or is it just an abstract art/ puzzel game and thats all?

All we know so far: You're supposed to find the anomaly.
The anomaly is a planet 90% like the one you started on. You might want to look out for a planet called "ANOMLY", at least that's what it is called in Episode 39. Who knows if it is called that when a new episode starts or if a player who found it before you named it.
Some planets appear to mark the anomaly with a ring in the sky. Use it to navigate, and look out for planets called MAP.
So, good luck, and avoid the norbler.
