A.

Open the folder Cities XL Platinum located in \Steam\SteamApps\common.
Open the folder Data then Interface and rename the folder Videos.
Run the game in order to get directly the main menu.

OR

B.

Please set the display mode of your Windows Desktop to 800x600 or 1024x768 (if the display mode 800x600 is not available).
For that, from the Desktop of Windows, right click on the screen background and click Screen resolution.
Then run Cities XL and set your display settings.
Quit the game and set to the previous display mode of your Windows Desktop then run the game.
Ghosen 16 jul 2013 om 8:37vm
Well done. Now the Game runs with example B, thank you very much.
Nice Support out there :-)
tuckerc90 31 aug 2013 om 2:40vm
I had the same problem. The issue is related to the display you are using. Check your display configuration and make sure your monitor (or flat screen tv) can output 800x600.
The doctor is in 7 sep 2013 om 9:08vm
this is most likely happening cause you have your computer hooked up to monitor that does not support 800x600

when the game starts it tries to go to that resolution by making directx call that will then fail cause the driver will say i cant do that and its game over

no easy solution other than to hook it up to monitor that will handle 800x600 or get a utility for your video card driver that will return yes even though its no.

actually since this happens with a number of games there is such a utility. it will let you override driver stuff like this

and then it will work

ok of course focus could change their code to not do 800x600 but then it would break users who have 800x600. so its not easy choice...
