Thanks, valve germany for letting me write this.
Quake is id software's other FPS giant that co-created the online-FPS with all its beloved tropes. Quake offers four episodes of fast-paced, exploration based, pre-2000s FPS-glory. Despite its grim, colourless visuals, Quake still looks and feels much more alive than modern products of the genre, with its medieval/lovecraftian inspired style and ambience coupled with fast-paced movement and gunplay, it's essentially a 3D Doom.
However, like Doom, Quake was originally meant to be run on MS-DOS, so you might require a source port for a more convenient (or let alone executable) experience. My biggest recommendation would be the darkplaces engine, you can download it for Quake 1 as well as its expansions in this link http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1756923
Quake remains one of the most popular retro-FPS games for good reasons, it still holds up as a fun and challenging arena shooter for both singleplayer and multiplayer.
It's basically Deathmatch Classic if it had a singleplayer and a right to exist.
And yes, newkids, dazz de gaem Kindergarten Fortwess 2 originated fwom.
