Yup!

The quick-and-dirty way:

While you are playing Quake, open the console. On U.S. keyboards the key for this is the tilde/backtick key, usually under ESC. Not sure about international keyboards but it's probably a key around the same location (upper-left corner, left of the number keys, under ESC).

So yeah. Press that key and the console will open. With the console open, type this:

+mlook

and press Enter. Now hit the console key again to close the console.

This gives you mouselook, but (especially if you're using the original Quake engine) it may only last for your current game session. If you don't want to have to do this every time you play, then you want to make this command permanent. A good way to do that is to create a file named autoexec.cfg located in the id1 folder. Any lines in this file will be automatically executed as console commands when Quake starts up. So, make a line in that file that says +mlook and you will be all set.

Ok, thanks! I also remember playing quake on non steam on dosbox, and with that i would use a command like god, and it would work until the next level and i would need to re-enter it. Would that be the same on steam? or with this command?

Edit: I typed the stuff below before I saw your second post, so let me answer that first: yep the commands (like the god cheat) are the same as you remember. Just open the console, type the command, press enter, then close the console.

OK on to the other stuff I was typing:

I don't mean to be constantly pimping quaddicted.com -- it's not even my website :-) -- but you would find this useful I think:

http://www.quaddicted.com/quake/configuration

And in general the "5 minute Quake guide" on the quaddicted.com front page is worth having a look at. If you poke around in some of the other active threads in this forum you'll see that a lot of folks recommend using a "modern" Quake engine. The Quake files you get from Steam are useful, but just as a source of game data; the Quake engines that people have been toiling away at for years are just better these days than the original engine.

Whether you end up using EZQuake, QuakeSpasm, DarkPlaces, DirectQ, or whatever... it'll be a better experience.

(Too bad there aren't sticky threads around here yet.)

you could go in the id1 folder in quake 1 foilder and make a notepad and type +mlook in it then save as autoexec.cfg and now permament

Turn off "lookstrafe" in the options and you'll have complete mouse freelook.
